A Journey of Dedication through Education: Sisters of Saint Joseph

Last updated on: February 3, 2011 at 10:00 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

I wrote this paper as a partial requirement to have the Georgia Historical Society erect a historical marker at Saint Mary on the Hill Church in Augusta. The project began as a request from Father Jerry Ragan, pastor of Saint Marys, but it became a personal year-long in depth search where I discovered many amazing things about the Sisters of Saint Joseph and the Catholic Church in south Georgia. The research helped me connect the parish where I was confirmed,... Read more

Mexican Traditions

Last updated on: February 1, 2011 at 11:25 am   By Father Pablo Migone

Last night I arrived late to a parishioner’s house for a rosary in anticipation for February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation. When I got out of my car two young boys came up to me and gave me five. At the same time a lady called out to me from the door, “come on in Padre.” The young boys looked at me surprised. One said in an excited voice, “I’ve seen you at church. Are you el Padre?” I... Read more

The Beatitudes and Confession

Last updated on: January 30, 2011 at 12:00 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

In today’s Gospel Jesus gives us the framework for Christian life with the beatitudes. These few and radical phrases become the law of the new covenant, the foundation, the guiding principle of Christian life. Jesus teaches us saying that we are blessed by God when we are poor in spirit, when we are humble; when we mourn, when we are meek, when we seek righteousness and justice, when we are merciful, when we are pure of heart, when we are... Read more

Out of the mouth of babes

Last updated on: January 26, 2011 at 1:18 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Some time ago I was visiting the 2nd grade class at the school and a few minutes before dismissal the tornado siren began sounding. The weather had been bad all day and from the expression on the teacher’s face, I quickly realized this was not a tornado drill. All the kids were led into the hallway and the younger ones began to cry. A teacher began praying the Hail Mary out loud over and over again and some kids joined... Read more

Martin Luther King Jr.

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:46 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

[From my parish bulletin] From time to time God raises prophets in the midst of turmoil and injustice to make his voice heard clearly, providing guidance and direction.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of these prophets.    I recently had the opportunity to visit the Martin Luther King Historic site in Atlanta and it struck me how privileged we are that this prophet lived in our own times and in our own state. When the prophet Jeremiah was called... Read more

Archbishop de Jong: The Cost of Speaking Up

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:47 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Johannes de Jong, Archbishop of Utrecht, the Netherlands, ordered all Catholic parishes in his country to read a pastoral letter on Sunday July 26, 1942 during Mass condemning the Nazi treatment of the Jewish people. The pastoral letter included a transcript of the telegram he had previously sent to Nazi authorities in union with other Dutch churches: “The undersigned Dutch churches, already deeply shocked by the actions taken against the Jews in the Netherlands that have excluded them from participating... Read more

Christian Identity

Last updated on: January 11, 2011 at 10:57 am   By Father Pablo Migone

[This was part of my homily for the feast of The Baptism of the Lord] During the days leading up to Christmas I heard from an old friend. He has just finished college and has decided to travel the world in search of his identity. He explained it was a great way for him to figure things out in life and to find himself. In other words, a way to find his identity. Some years ago I read the international... Read more

The Our Father – Why the extra line?

Last updated on: January 7, 2011 at 10:24 am   By Father Pablo Migone

I can safely say that everyone is aware that when Catholics and Protestants pray the Our Father together, there is always an awkward pause after “deliver us from evil.” Catholics want to say “amen” while Protestants want to say “For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.” Why the different custom and where did it come from? Scripture contains two versions of the Our Father. In both cases it’s Jesus teaching his disciples how to pray.... Read more

Rosary Wearing

Last updated on: January 5, 2011 at 1:46 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

A few weeks ago a parishioner who works at a public school called me. The school principal had asked her about students wearing rosaries around their necks so my parishioner called to consult me. This phenomenon has become widespread. Many people, especially young ones, are wearing rosaries around their necks. Celebrities too, you see them on TV and magazines. Most of these rosary-wearing people are not even Catholic. How does the Church view this? I doubt the Church has an... Read more
