Saint Teresa of Avila, Nada te Turbe

Last updated on: March 25, 2011 at 3:09 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

This is a beautiful poem written by the great 16th century Spanish mystic Saint Teresa of Avila on the margin of her breviary. Unfortunately the English translation (which follows) is unable to capture entirely the beauty of the words in Spanish that make the poem so powerful. Nada te turbe; nada te espante; todo se pasa;Dios no se muda,la pacienciatodo lo alcanza.Quien a Dios tiene, nada le falta.Solo Dios basta. Let nothing upset you,let nothing startle you.All things pass;God does not... Read more

Santa Balbina

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:51 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Today’s Lenten Station in Rome is the Church of Saint Balbina. This small church sits at the foot of the Aventine Hill and is not visited often, mostly because it only opens to the public one hour per week for Sunday Mass. This is one of the best preserved ancient churches of Rome. In the early years of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire, Christians met in each others houses. As communities grew, a room of a particular house was set... Read more

Saint Patrick’s Tomb

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:51 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

A few years ago I had the opportunity to visit the small church in Saul, Northern Ireland which marks the site where Saint Patrick began the evangelization of Ireland. He is buried in the nearby cemetery. This small sign above stands by the small church of Saul. It reads: Church of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Memorial Church, Saul On the site of this Church St. Patrick built the first Christian Church in Ireland 432 A.D. Here is the most ancient ecclesiastical... Read more

Saint Patricks Day Homily in Savannah

Last updated on: March 17, 2011 at 5:05 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Happy Saint Patricks Day from the great city of Savannah. The festivities began this morning with a beautiful Mass at 8am at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Bishop Kevin Boland presided and Archbishop Edwin O’Brien of Baltimore was the homilist. The homily was very appropriate for today’s celebration and for today’s society. After narrating the familiar story of the life of Saint Patrick, Archbishop O’Brien had us consider what Saint Patrick would think if he came back to... Read more

Basilica of Saint Mary Major

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:52 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Every Peruvian child learns at a young age that when the Spanish captured the ruling Inca emperor Atahualpa in 1532, the Spaniard Francisco Pizarro held him for a ransom. Atahualpa had one room filled with gold and two with silver up to where the tip of his finger reached in order to gain his freedom. Despite fulfilling the demands of Pizarro, Atahualpa was executed in August 1533 and Spain took possession of the lands and resources of the Inca Empire.... Read more

Roman Lent Station Church: Saint Anastasia

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:52 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Today’s Lenten Station in Rome is the Church of Saint Anastasia. This church is not a major destination for pilgrims and tourists despite its importance. The original church was built by Emperor Constantine in the early 4th century as the Imperial Chapel on the Palatine Hill. All that remains today of the majestic palace on the Palatine are some impressive ruins and the open green space of the Circus Maximus. Experts argue that this specific site was chosen by Constantine... Read more

Pastoral Statement on Immigration by the Catholic Bishops of Georgia

Last updated on: December 16, 2015 at 8:49 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

I was very happy to read this statement by the bishops of Georgia recently on the front page of my diocesan newspaper. I have added italics to stress some key points that provide a summary of the statement. Many abuses happen daily against illegal immigrants that cry out to heaven. We must remember that the dignity we have as human beings comes from our Creator and is not given to us by the State. Therefore, whether in a country legally... Read more

Obedience and Eucharist

Last updated on: March 12, 2011 at 4:46 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

In today’s readings we hear a beautiful Scriptural summary of salvation history: Adam and Eve don’t resist temptation and sin through their disobedience. Jesus, on the other hand, resists temptation and does not sin through his obedience. It’s a perfect contrast. Saint Paul stresses this contrast in his letter to the Romans, “for just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so, through the obedience of the one, the many will be made righteous.”... Read more

Roman Lenten Station Churches

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:42 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

A very ancient tradition still thrives in Rome, the Lenten Station Churches. During the pontificate of Pope Gregory the Great (6th century) each day of Lent was linked with a particular church of the city. In the olden days the Bishop of Rome would visit each church on its particular day as a means to foster unity within the Roman Church. Today the Pope no longer visits every church or station, but does visit the first one on Ash Wednesday,... Read more

Beginning of Lent

Last updated on: March 9, 2011 at 2:23 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

We have just begun our forty day journey towards Easter when we will celebrate the greatest mysteries of our faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is a time of preparation and anticipation for this great celebration of Easter. Lent is also a time of sacrificial love. Giving up something for Lent sometimes becomes trivial or looses its significance, like replacing no meat Fridays with a seafood feast or giving up chocolate simply to lose weight. Lent is... Read more
