Ancient Meditation on Death

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:49 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Have you ever wondered how ancient non-Christians dealt with death? What follows is most of Ode 2.14 by the Roman poet Horace (56-8 BC) where he meditates on the transient nature of life and the harsh reality of death. It’s very sobering, revealing and thought provoking, even for us moderns today. I came across it a few years ago in class about the transformation of Rome into a Christian city. Remember, this is looking at death without a Christian understanding... Read more

The Pledge of Eternal Life

Last updated on: April 10, 2011 at 11:51 am   By Father Pablo Migone

This beautiful fresco by Luca Signorelli is from the Chapel of San Brizio in the Cathedral of Orvieto, Italy. Two angels sound trumpets announcing the end of times. Skeletons rise from the ground and their bodies are restored as they resurrect to live eternally in the presence of God. This weekend I gave the following homily on the pledge of eternal life.In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus make a pledge: “whoever believes in me, though they should die, will come... Read more

Tajci

Last updated on: April 9, 2011 at 3:03 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Last Thursday we had the blessing to have Tatiana Cameron, or Tajci, at my parish. I had never heard of her until two or three months ago when Lindsey, the music director at my parish, said Tajci would be coming to the parish for a concert. I was amazed by the beauty of her voice and the depth of her prayer. The 300 who attended were deeply moved. Rather than a concert, it was a sung meditation on the passion... Read more

Pictorial Tour of Saint Paul Outside the Walls

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:49 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Despite the grandeur of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, my favorite basilica in the city is Saint Paul Outside the Walls. I may be a bit biased in my choice since Saint Paul and I share the same name. This great basilica was originally built by Emperor Constantine over the tomb of Saint Paul and was soon expanded by Emperor Theodosius in the late 4th century. The present structure was built in the 1800s after a great fire in 1823... Read more

The Man Born Blind

Last updated on: April 3, 2011 at 8:20 am   By Father Pablo Migone

In seminary I took a class on the Johannine Writings, that is, a class where we studied the books of the Bible written by Saint John: his Gospel, his three letters and the Book of Revelation. We spent almost two weeks analyzing the Gospel passage we just heard, the passage of the man born blind. After all the analysis and all the questions, problems and insights raised, the one issue that struck me the most is the following, “Why does... Read more

Saint John Lateran

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:50 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Had I wanted to be more precise and accurate in the title of this blog, I should have written Basilica of the Savior and Saints John the Baptist and Evangelist at the Lateran. This is the full name of this basilica which, as two inscriptions reveal on its facade, is the mother church of Rome and the whole world. What follows is the translation of a presentation I did for a class I took in seminary where we studied the... Read more

Vatican Splendors

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:50 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Last week I had the opportunity to visit the Vatican Splendors Exhibit at the Fort Lauderdale Art Museum with a group of parishioners. The exhibit was very well put together, tracing the history and artistic heritage of the Catholic Church from apostolic times to Pope Benedict XVI. The highlight of the exhibit for me was seeing a replica of the main doors of Saint Peter’s Basilica. The bottom two panels depict the martyrdoms of Saints Peter and Paul. During the... Read more

San Pudenziana

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:51 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

This is another seldom visited church in Rome that is one of the Lenten Station Churches. The Church of San Pudenziana stands over the remains of the house of the Roman Senator Pudens, father of Saints Pudenziana and Praxedes. Pudens was a high-profile convert in ancient Rome, believed to be the one mentioned by Saint Paul in his second letter to Timothy. When Saint Peter arrived to Rome, it is believed Pudens housed him for some time. Since antiquity, this... Read more

Benedict’s Interview

Last updated on: March 28, 2011 at 1:16 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

I recently finished reading Light of the World, a book by Peter Seewald where he interviews Pope Benedict XVI. The book got much attention right before its publication due to the Pope’s comment on condoms, yet that takes up a whole two paragraphs of the 219 page text. The book contains many interesting and surprising answers. It gives great insight into the Pope’s thoughts and opinions on world events and current Church affairs. I feel a closeness to Pope Benedict... Read more

The Eucharist and Living Waters

Last updated on: March 27, 2011 at 5:33 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

[Homily for the Third Sunday of Lent, Year A. The Gospel reading is the Samaritan Woman at the Well]This Gospel passage narrates a great encounter where a woman comes to faith in Jesus Christ. At first she wants nothing to do with Jesus, pushing him aside by reminding him Jews should not have any contact with Samaritans. You can almost hear her tone of voice, “get away, don’t bother me, you shouldn’t even be talking to me.” The Samaritan woman... Read more
