Mexican Independence and Hidalgo

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:55 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

On a day like today 202 years ago, also on a Sunday but very early in the morning, a brave priest, Father Miguel Hidalgo, rang the bell of his church in Dolores, Mexico calling the townspeople to take up arms against the Spanish colonial government of Mexico.  After three hundred years of colonial rule, this event began the eleven-year long war of Mexican independence. Hildago soon adopted the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, queen and patroness of all... Read more

Comedy Central: Cardinal Dolan and Stephen Colbert

Last updated on: September 15, 2012 at 12:13 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

I once heard that Jesus and disciples must have always been laughing and having a great time.  Since Jesus was all-knowing, he must have known every joke in the book. Being a priest without a good sense of humor is an unbearable task.  Being a Christian without exuding joy is a flaw.  A priest said to me some years ago, “remember we are a religion of redemption, we are a religion of joy.  We live rejoicing always in the great... Read more

Relics of Saint John Chrysostom

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:55 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

One of the greatest archbishops in the long and turbulent history of Constantinople is the man we remember today, Saint John Chrysostom.  His great skill for preaching earned him the title “Chrysostomos” which means “golden tongued.” Fortunately many of his sermons and writings have survived, his most lasting contribution being the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom which is widely used today for Divine Worship in Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches. Saint John Chrysostom’s eloquent speech and direct manner earned him... Read more

From restlessness to fulfillment

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:55 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Every heart searches for meaning.  Every soul longs for happiness.  We are born restless.  We are born with a void inside, a missing piece, which moves us to seek fulfillment.   We are like a beautiful and complex jigsaw puzzle with one missing piece.  Without that last piece we remain incomplete, so we tirelessly search for the piece that will complete the picture. We often attempt to place other appealing pieces which satisfy temporarily but do not complete the puzzle... Read more

Necesidad de Dios

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:56 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Read more

First Eucharist on US soil

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:56 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

On September 8th, 1565, Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed on the shores of Florida and claimed the territory for Spain and the Catholic Church.  This marked the founding of the city of Saint Augustine and the Nombre de Dios Mission where Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales celebrated the first Mass on modern-day US soil. These early Spanish settlers began a devotion to Our Lady of La Leche, Our Lady of Milk, which continues today 447 years later at the... Read more

De inquietud a plenitud

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:56 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Read more

Saint Gregory the Great

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:56 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Tomb of Pope Saint Gregory the Great at Saint Peter Basilica Today we remember a man so instrumental in the growth and development of the Church of Rome that he has earned the title of “Great.”  Gregory was a learned and able man who rose to the highest civil position in the government of the city of Rome in the 6th century.  It was a time of war, famine and illness in Rome.  It was a time of decline, fear... Read more

Fulfillment in God: Monica and Augustine

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 7:56 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

There is much wisdom in the Church’s celebration of the feasts of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine one day apart from each other.  Yesterday we recalled Saint Monica’s perseverance in trail and adversity, and today we rejoice in the fruit of her prayer: the conversion of her son Augustine. One of Augustine’s most famous lines from his masterwork Confessions is found early in the work, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until in... Read more
