Last week, I was interviewed about the food pantry we run at my parish.  We assist mostly needy parishioners with food, diapers, hygiene products and occasionally with utilities.  When we opened it last year, it was in response to more and more requests for help from parishioners – I never imagined it would get the traffic it has received since January of this year.  It has grown from just one rack of canned goods in our parish kitchen, to one room and a half of our parish office.

I share the section of the article from the Savannah Morning News where the reporter, Ansley Franco, wrote about this ministry:

At Our Lady of Lourdes in Port Wentworth and Corpus Christi in Pooler, Father Pablo Migone operates a small food pantry that has recently seen more non-parishioners seeking help.  The pantry, which opened in August 2024 to assist a few struggling families, now faces what Migone described as a “greater intensity in the need” for food assistance.

“We don’t have an extraordinarily high number of non-parishioners or non-immigrants who come, but now we have them, which in the past we never did,” he said.

In January, the pantry served 131 individuals, but since February, that number has climbed to over 200 people each month.  Last month alone, it helped 45 unduplicated families – a total of 226 people.

Migone said the church has a special opportunity to serve those in need.

“As a church, it’s easy to say ‘God is with you.  God loves you.  God will help you.’ Those are things we believe are true that are easy to say,” Migone said.  “But, as a church, we have a responsibility to back that up with some tangible support.”

The pantry, open four days a week, welcomes anyone in need regardless of church affiliation.
