Today at noontime in Rome, the Holy Father Pope Francis named Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv, the seventh Archbishop of Atlanta.

A press conference will be held today at 9:30am in Atlanta at the Pastoral Center in Smyrna. Another will follow in Savannah on Friday at 10am at the Catholic Pastoral Center there.

Having worked closely with Archbishop-elect Hartmayer for the past six years as Chancellor, Vocation Director, and his assistant, I will miss him in Savannah. We have driven tens of thousands of miles together throughout the 40,000 square miles that make up the Diocese of Savannah. He returns to Atlanta where he worked as a pastor for fifteen years at Saint Philip Benizi and Saint John Vianney parishes.

Almost one year after the transfer of Archbishop Wilton Gregory to Washington DC, and many rumors about who would succeed him, the mystery has been unraveled today.

The installation Mass will take place on May 6th at Saint Peter Chanel Parish, Roswell.
