Looking back, looking forward: a year of big gay blogging on Patheos
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
You know how when some TV show writers are feeling a bit of the old writers block and they throw together a “retrospective” episode flashing back to the scenes that got the most laughs or tears? Well this post is a little like that except it’s not so much writer’s block as having so many posts percolating at the same time that I can’t seem to finish the “next” one. It has been a year now that I’ve been at this... Read more

Yo Pat, the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was NOT about homosexuality
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
So apparently Pat Robertson, with his very own special blend of cray-cray (bless his heart) is playing the part he and his ilk play so well. As he read from his ever predictable script on the 700 Club Thursday, he warned his faithful viewers that, in response to the SCOTUS ruling this week, God could do something ‘drastic’ like Sodom and Gomorrah. Thank you Pat for providing me the opportunity to share once again that the narrative about the destruction... Read more

The False Polemic of Gay vs. Christian
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
Here we all are the day after the Supreme Court of the United States has declared critical elements of DOMA unconstitutional. Praise the Lord in all her Wisdom, Grace and Love for the ray of light piercing the darkness. Of course, as millions of Americans rejoice for their own or their neighbors’ step forward, there are others who are writhing and writing in distressed agony. It is true that SOME Christians are horrified at the news of their neighbors’ increasing... Read more

DOMA Struck Down – Thank you
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
Some phrases that took my breath away in the UNITED STATES v. WINDSOR, EXECUTOR OF THE ESTATE OF SPYER, ET AL. case “DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment. “DOMA singles out a class of persons deemed by a State entitled to recognition and protection to enhance their own liberty.” “There is a “careful consideration” standard: In determining whether a law is motivated by improper animus or purpose,... Connecting the dots: June 24, 2013
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
These collections may seem random, and yeah they are a bit, but over time, as we work together to connect the dots it is my hope that a picture of compassion, justice, peace and faith all scribbled in with love and a little silliness will emerge for us all. These are just a few of the items that struck me deeply last week. What have I left out? Maybe you saw a post you’d like to share too. When hate-mongers give you lemons, set... Read more

What’s the difference between welcoming and affirming homosexuals?
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
In the wake of all the flap about the, rather specious, albeit on the surface, good and hopeful news from the now defunct Exodus International, a friend who is on this journey with us, asked me to explain the difference between welcoming and affirming. He honestly and openly is concerned about those who are drawing a line in the sand and doesn’t entirely get what the big deal is. Here are my thoughts on that very sticky wicket. See, I grew up at... Surviving the Exodus . . . finding a radically new life.
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
I just could not wait to post this powerful testimony from a friend of mine, David Gregory Starbuck. No wordy introductions, no set-up, just lifting up his words as a prayer for grace and understanding… Forgiveness is in process and it will come, but as an Exodus survivor I at least have to pause a bit for some reflection. It is a not-too-subtle form of abuse that says, “Homosexuality is a psycho-spiritual disorder from which God can heal you.” Twenty... Read more

What changed Exodus International’s Mind?
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
On June 19, the leaders of Exodus International issued a formal, public apology to the LGBT community for the years of deep damage they have wrought in the lives of people of faith who were convinced they could be changed from gay to straight by the organizations wrongheaded, harmful practices. Today I awoke to the Good News that the board of Exodus International has voted to close the “ministry” all together. What on earth would lead them to change their minds so completely? Grace. I choose to believe it... Read more

Owning our cray-cray so it doesn’t own us
Last updated on: October 30, 2017 at 3:53 pm By Kimberly Knight
There are bears lurking all hot and hungry in the woods and there ancient alligators gliding sure and slow under the surface waiting to lunge and consume. The Spanish moss hangs in haunting swags and spidery tendrils. In my canoe, poling alone, weighed down with tatty packs full of wadded up anxiety shoved in amongst moth-eaten fears and crusty self-loathing, I nearly drown in my own head before the world’s real threats can even touch me. The energy emanating from... Read more

So many great blog posts, videos, tweets and books came into view for me last week. Here are a few that I would like to share with you. This is a a wonderful post by Sarah Moon about how radical inclusivity actually turns her away from the table. It is a complex world we live in and radical hospitality often has its limits. “There’s no grace for me, as I try to work through all the festering hate toward my rapist... Read more
