Dr. Scot McKnight Leaves Northern and Goes South to Houston
Last updated on: May 27, 2024 at 1:57 pm By Kermit Zarley
Leading New Testament professor, Dr. Scot X. McKnight, announced early this year that he would be resigning from the embattled Northern Seminary, located near Chicago, due to a toxic culture in its leadership. Scot recently announced that he will resume his teaching career in my old hometown of “Heavenly Houston,” as I like to call it. McKnight will be teaching New Testament and leading the DMin program at the Houston Theological Seminary, a school within Houston Christian University (HCU). This... Read more

The New Untouchables Is SCOTUS
Last updated on: May 25, 2024 at 7:10 pm By Kermit Zarley
SCOTUS–the Supreme Court of the United States–is The New Untouchables. That is, we Americans are now realizing that, due to our brand of democracy as set forth in our Constitution, our Supreme Court justices always have been “the untouchables,” and we just never knew it. How so? Their integrity never needed to be challenged until now. And there is no code of conduct by which SCOTUS justices can be measured. There is no branch of the U.S. government that conducts... Xander Schaufelle Wins PGA Championship as his First Major
Last updated on: May 19, 2024 at 10:00 pm By Kermit Zarley
Thirty-year old Xander Schaufelle finally broke through into the winners’ circle today by shooting a six-under par 65 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, to win his first major–the 106th PGA Championship. He won by one stroke over muscleman Bryson DeChambeau by holing a five-foot birdie putt on the last hole. As hard-working DeChambeau was banging out balls on the practice tee, preparing and hoping for a playoff, Schaufelle’s ball on the 18th green curled halfway around the edge... Read more

Richard Bauckham on “Son of Man”
Last updated on: May 18, 2024 at 9:10 pm By Kermit Zarley
My favorite religious study for about the past thirty years or more has been what is called “Son of Man study.” Richard Bauckham is a leading, British, New Testament scholar who specializes in Christology, Son of Man study, and Second Temple Judaism. I regard Richard Bauckham as an insightful and outstanding New Testament scholar, and I have four of his books in my library. Last summer, Eerdmans published Bauckham’s first of a highly anticipated (at least among scholars) two volumes... Read more

Students Reject H. Clinton’s Portrayal of Oslo Peace Process
Last updated on: May 11, 2024 at 2:05 pm By Kermit Zarley
Months ago, students objected to, and walked out of, Hilary Clinton’s class at Columbia University due to what she said about the Palestinian rejection of her husband Bill Clinton’s Oslo Peace Process. She blamed Palestinians for rejecting that offer, put forth by US President Bill Clinton and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. On Thursday, Ms. Clinton appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” She said students involved in these many college demonstrations–calling for Israel to stop the war in Gaza and perhaps... Read more

The UN General Assembly Says “Yes” to a Palestinian State
Last updated on: May 11, 2024 at 12:53 pm By Kermit Zarley
Yesterday, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly that Palestinians should have full-member status at the UN, an upgrade to its “observer status” granted in 1974. But four nations also announced yesterday that in a few days, on May 21, they are going to announce their recognition of a Palestinian state despite the fact that there is none. Those four nations are Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, and Malta. Actually, back in March they first indicated their intentions to do so. It will... Read more

Make Post-War Gaza an enlarged Palestinian State
Last updated on: May 3, 2024 at 7:05 pm By Kermit Zarley
When the war in Gaza ends, the situation may be close to the establishment of a Palestinian state replicating the ancient nation of the Philistines. The New York Times reports today that, although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained somewhat silent about what will happen to the Gaza Strip when the war ends there, “Behind the scenes, however, senior officials in his office have been weighing an expansive plan for postwar Gaza, in which Israel would offer to share... “The Truth Will Make You Free,” even about COVID Vaccines
Last updated on: May 3, 2024 at 12:33 pm By Kermit Zarley
Jesus of Nazareth taught, “search and you will find,” and “the truth will make you free.” Do this and you will not be a bound-up victim who believes in conspiracy theories, such as that COVID-19 vaccines cause autism. Was Jesus “Deceiving the Crowd”? The New Testament’s Gospel of John relates that during the latter part of Jesus’ two-to-three-year itinerant and public ministry, he attended the Feast of Tabernacles (Booths) at the temple in Jerusalem (John 7.1-2). By this time,... Read more

What about Anti-Palestinianism?
Last updated on: May 1, 2024 at 10:58 pm By Kermit Zarley
In response to Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza, today the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that broadens the definition of “antisemitism” in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that bars U.S. citizens from discriminating against Jews and also prohibits “targeting the State of Israel.” What! You can’t even criticize Israel anymore? Many analysts claim it would severely encroach upon free speech laws. This legislation now goes to the Senate. I doubt it will pass as is.... Read more

Why Did Cohen Say Today Trump Had Sessions “in his Pocket”?
Last updated on: April 26, 2024 at 12:20 am By Kermit Zarley
Legally, it was a historic day today for the USA. Two important legal cases are now being conducted simultaneously that concern former President Donald Trump. New York State’s Manhattan trial indicting Trump began Monday. It is the first court case in our nation’s history in which a former president has been charged with a crime, in this case 34 felonies. If Trump’s lawyers lose, he could wind up in prison. The other legal case began today. The U.S. Supreme Court... Read more
