Several things have been happening in which the gap between Israeli supporters and Palestinian supporters in the now nearly 60-year old conflict between them, dating it from the 1967 Six-Day War when Israel took possession of the UN-deemed Occupied Territories.

Sheeran Concert Pushes Against “Free Palestine”

For example, music rapper Macklemore sounded off onstage at an Ed Sheeran concert days ago, saying he wanted to say “two words—’free Palestine.'” That concert was scheduled to tour a dozen U.S. cities, including Boston. Robert Kraft—owner of the New England Patriots, Gillette Stadium, and a big supporter of Israel and the Trump administration—immediately told Sheeran to cancel Macklemore or Sheeran could not conduct his concerts at Gillette Stadium and several others he had contacted to do likewise. So, Sheeran canceled his friend Macklemore, and several other band members quit in protest. Plus, there has been a big pushback against this by more and more Americans who now support Palestinians.

Today, the Trump administration announced that Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, would not be allowed into the U.S. to attend the UN General Assembly meeting in New York City next week. It accused Abbas and the PA of “supporting terrorists” without giving specifics for proof. Trump had done the same this time last year, banning Abbas from entry into the U.S. It was because seven western nations that included the UK, France, and Canada, were planning (and carried through with it) to officially recognize the State of Palestine. It was a significant symbolic gesture, although there really is no State of Palestine, because those nations had held back from doing so since this movement started nearly 40 years ago, in 1988.

US Bans PA Attending UN General Assembly

The UN headquarters has always been located in New York City. The UN Charter states that the U.S. must not ban nations from attending UN General Assembly meetings there. In 1974, the UN made granted the PLO “observer status” as UN General Assembly meetings since the PLO had just announced a change of strategy by becoming “non-violent,” which it pretty much has been since. This barring of Abbas, now twice, raises the question of the UN disciplining the U.S. for this breach of UN rules.

Israel Causes Anti-Semitism

The world is increasingly becoming anti-Semitic largely because of Israel’s increasing aggressiveness toward Palestinians, not only due to the horrific killing of over 70,000 Gaza Palestinians in Israel’s now three-year old war in Gaza, but also Jewish settlers in the mistreating Palestinians in the West Bank.
