United Nations Map of Israel and the Occupied Territories: June, 1997; Map No. 3243
The U.S. has always favored Israel over the Palestinians regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This is in contrast to strong world opinion that has supported Palestinian aspirations to have their own nation. Even though the U.S. has been the main power-broker in trying to resolve this conflict, it has always favored Israel over Palestinians. I call this anti-Palestinianism in comparison to anti-Semitism.
Why Has U.S. Favored Israelis Over Palestinians?
This pro-Israel position held by the U.S. has been energized by several sources: (1) an overreaction to the Holocaust that is irrelevant to the plight of Palestinians; (2) the political power of the Jewish organization America-Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC); (3) evangelical pastors who unfairly embrace Christian Zionism due to their misguided interpretations about Israel in biblical prophecies; (4) six million American Jewish citizens compared to only about 175,000 Palestinian American citizens according to the Center for Arab Narratives in the U.S.; U.S. media that is impacted by all of this disproportionate influence by Jews over Palestinians; (5) the Trump administration providing ultra-support to Israel and disfavor to the Palestinians.
But the tide is turning. It is largely due to the hugely disproportionate killing of over 75,000 Palestinians by IDF in Israel’s war in Gaza compared to the 1,200 Jews killed by Hamas Palestinian militants in one day that caused this now nearly three-year old war. Governments and organizations all over the world are declaring that this Israeli overreaction to that horrific loss of Jews is a genocide.
What the Polls Are Now Saying
The respected Quinnipiac University just reported that its poll shows that Americans now favor Palestinians over Israelis regarding the now 70-year old Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This poll show that 38% of American voters in the U.S. favor Palestinians compared to 35% of American voters who favor Israelis. This follows a Gallup poll taken last February which also showed for the first time the same thing: 41% to 36%. And a Pew survey now shows that a bare majority of U.S. Republicans under the age of 50 hold negative views of the State of Israel.
Surprisingly, this shift is being largely fueled by a change among Republican voters, who historically have strongly been supporters of Israel. They have been influenced by Republican right-wing news commentators such as Tucker Carlson, who has had a dramatic political change going from being a strong supporter of Republican President Donald Trump to now being one of his most fierce critics. Some of these pundits such as Carlson are being unfairly accused of antisemitism, which has always been the go-to ammunition of uncritical supporters of Israel, especially Christian Zionists.
An Issue in the Upcoming Mid-Term Election
This will be an important issue in the upcoming mid-term U.S. elections in November. For over fifty years, the U.S. has given Israel $3 billion or more in the form of financial aid and military arms, and it usually has not given Palestinians anything. But now, that Quinnipiac poll says 48% of American voters believe the U.S. is too supportive of Israel, yet only 8% believe the U.S. has not been supportive enough. The media outlet Haaretz now reports that Israel’s government has recently spent $40 million in a campaign to influence Christian Republicans.
Democrats historically have been quite supportive of the State of Israel. But in my opinion and many others, U.S. President Joe Biden was way off balance in his ultra support of Israel in its Gaza war. If the the upcoming mid-term elections, the Democrats gain majority rule in both the House and Senate, I anticipate that there will be changes to the U.S. position regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that will result in favoring Palestinians like never before. The first will likely be the U.S. joining the seven major western nations that, for the first time, announced their recognition of a Palestinian state one year ago even though there is no Palestinian state. But as my 1990, perhaps prescient, book says in its title, Palestine Is Coming.
[The main half of this book—which shows how the Bible predicts there will be a Palestinian state in the coastal plain, and Israel will annex all of the West Bank—is free reading at kermitzarley.com by clicking “On Palestine.” But its chapter on Christian Zionism is not in this portion.]
