Wyndam Clark, PGA Tour pro golfer
Wyndham Clark started today with a six-stroke lead in the U.S. Open golf tournament at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island in Southampton, New York. He held on to win his second such title by one stroke again, this time with a four-under par total of 276. Sam Burns finished alone in second place after making a gallant bid to almost close the whole gap between these two pros. But he fell one stroke short by barely missing his birdie putt on the last hole, which would have forced a playoff. Burns has seriously contended in three U.S. Opens now and fallen back each time.
Clark Was Heckled by Fans for His Past Anger
Clark was paired in the last twosome with Scottie Scheffler, the #1 pro golfer in the world, who finished fourth. Clark had to endure some heckling from the galleries for past episodes of angry outbursts. As a result, tournament officials reportedly had to direct five fans off the premises after they blurted out derogatory comments at Clark, some including expletives.
Why such a ruckus? At last year’s U.S. Open, held at Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Clark got so angry on Friday for missing the 36-hole cut that he bashed his locker in the clubhouse, severely damaging it. The club later issued a public ban, stating that Clark would not be allowed on its premises again. As a result, Clark issued a public apology. I thought it did not display much penitence.
In my entire pro golf career, I had never seen or heard of a PGA Tour pro damaging a locker at the host club. To make matters worse, I thought the PGA Tour should have disciplined Clark for that ill behavior. But they never said anything about it until the Oakmont club issued that letter and made it public more than a week after it occurred.
Furthermore, at last year’s major, the PGA Championship, Clark angrily threw his driver so hard near a volunteer that it struck and damaged a sign, and the club shaft snapped. Former PGA Tour pro and prominent TV commentator Brandel Chamblee was quite critical of Clark’s angry episodes, saying that great players like Jack Nicklaus never did anything like that, which was quite true.
I Wish Wyndham Clark Well
In Clark’s victory speech after winning today, he mentioned that incident, said it did not reflect on who he is, and vowed he would continue to win golf fans over, even mentioning the word “redemption.” I thought that when he did publicly admit the incident last year, he should have announced that he would undergo an anger management treatment. I’m sure his brother Christians on the Tour hope he does better with this. As I posted yesterday, leaders Clark, Scheffler, and Burns attend the weekly meetings of the PGA Tour Bible Study.
Yet, I still wish the best for Wyndham Clark. The more he wins tournaments such as the U.S. Open—which I think is the greatest golf tournament in the world—the more he must realize that he needs to be a better model of a person in the greatest game on grass. I wish him well in doing so.
