On February 28, U.S. President Donald Trump foisted “a war of his choosing,” as many call it, on Iran, with Israel as its accomplice. He did this without consulting the U.S. Congress in accordance with the U.S. Constitution based on the definition of war. Trump said it was not a war but an “military operation.” Sounds like he got that from his dictator buddy the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Signing the Memorandum of Understanding
Tuesday, two days ago, while attending the G-7 meeting in Paris, Trump signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a preparation for a peace deal that has Trump’s MAGA political base outraged about it. It’s because critics and even Republican leaders are claiming it is a capitulation to Iran and thus makes Iran the winner and the U.S. and Israel the losers in this war that had been paused for several weeks due to peace negotiations.
Why Did the U.S. Go to War with Iran?
In the beginning of this war, Trump had said the main reason for it was to help the Iranian people overthrow their unwanted political regime. It is a hardline, Shite, Islamic theocracy that has existed since 1979. But a mere few days into the war, even after killing Iran’s top political leaders, it became obvious that the regime was surviving simply with different leaders taking their places.
Trump then said the main purpose for the war was to eliminate Iran’s ability to produce a nuclear weapon and to destroy its missiles and ability to make missiles. Yet the U.S. and Israel had bombed Israel a year ago for that purpose, and Trump declared that Iran’s nuclear’s abilities were then in shambles. Israel and MAGA are most upset that the MoU only kicks Iran’s nuclear ability down the road for sixty days to come to some kind of agreement about it.
Trump had much pressure exerted on him by Gulf Arab countries that have U.S. military bases from which the U.S. launched much of its firepower into Iran with great success, thus much destruction. Yet, just as Iran had warned, in retaliation it struck several of these bases in Gulf countries with which Iran had been friendly.
Trump’s Geography about Qatar and Iran
Heads of state of these Gulf countries, primarily Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar applied pressure on President Trump to end this fighting and end this war. Qatar and Pakistan had been the two nations acting as moderators in peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.
This war had resulted in Iran blocking the Strait of Hormuz, the only exit out of the Persian Gulf. Until then, one fourth of the world’s seaborne oil and natural gas had been transiting out of the Persian Gulf through this single exit—the Strait of Hormuz. This blockage immediately caused the price of a barrel of oil to double, from $60 to $120. Qatar is a peninsula on the Arabian Peninsula that juts out into the Persian Gulf. (I’m writing a book about all of this right now, expecting it to be finished and published by year’s end.)
All of this is to say that because President Trump was the originator of this war, and Qatar has been an important nation involved in peace negotiations, you would think that Mr. Trump knows something about where Qatar is on a map and what it looks like. But Trump has demonstrated before that he apparently didn’t excel in geography in school, if he ever took geography. Why?
Two Steps, ‘Boom, Boom,’ and You’re in Qatar
Last October, Trump spoke to reporters on Air Force One, the jumbo presidential aircraft, about the Middle East and especially the nations of Qatar and Iran. He said, with his often exposed inability to form sentences (so he must not have graded too well in English school classes either), “They’re literally, you walk over from Iran to Qatar. You can walk it in one second. You go ‘boom, boom’ [apparently referring to taking a step], and now you’re in Qatar, that’s tough territory.”
Qatar is very small, whereas Iran is very large. Qatar is located on the western side of the Persian Gulf, and Iran is located on the eastern side of the Persian Gulf. So, the Persian Gulf separates these two nations, Iran and Qatar, with 110 miles of seawater between them at the closest. If Trump is going to walk from Iran to Qatar in two steps, he is going to have to walk on water and take two steps that are each 55 miles long! Thassa a long step!
This week, Trump was at the G-7 meeting, speaking to reporters, while alongside Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the the Emir of Qatar. Trump said concerning the Gulf countries of the Middle East, “Qatar is the closest to Iran, physically, so with other countries. I noticed that they [I guess referring to Saudi Arabians] had to travel about 45 minutes to get there. With you,” speaking to the Emir of Qatar, “you could walk right across the border,” as if Qatar and Iran share a border, which they don’t.
Trump Compared Himself to Jesus
Maybe Trump thinks he can walk on water like Jesus did. Trump compared himself with Jesus recently by posting an AI-generated image that pictured himself dressed and supposedly looking like Jesus. Trump explained, “I thought it was me as a doctor.” He added, “It’s supposed to be as a doctor making people better. And I do make people better. I make people a lot better.”
Trump’s geography isn’t so good, but neither is his self-depiction as a doctor. This posted image caused professing Christians in his MAGA base to ask that it be removed, which it was. I think Donald Trump thinking he’s like Jesus is about as extreme as this guy gets, which is pretty extreme. What do you think?
