Co-leader Patrick Reed shot 68 today at Torrey Pines Golf Course to win the Farmers Insurance Open by five strokes over five players who were tied for second. Reed easily marched to victory because no one really mustered a charge against him. It was Reed’s ninth PGA Tour win in a rather feisty career marked by alleged rules infractions in which he was not penalized, one of them occurring yesterday. But the tough-minded red-shirt wearer on Sunday has the knack of putting such controversies behind him as he marches ever onward.

Later this year, the U.S. Open will be back at Torrey Pines, one of the best public golf courses in the U.S. (actually there are two, but the South Course is the best). That’s where Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open in 2010 in such dramatic fashion, almost playing the game on a broken leg. Reed likely will be full of confidence when that time comes, trying to add a second major to his fairly illustrious pro golf career.

As for the Tiger, has fifteen majors to his credit. He is trying to catch Jack Nicklaus’ record of eighteen major wins. But The Tiger is aging with is an orthopedically, surgery-laden body. Yet he likely will be the nostalgic favorite then and certainly the hometown favorite. That’s because when Tiger’s dad asked him, at about ten years of age or less, where he would most like to play an eighteen hole golf course, the youngster said it was a golf course just down the road a piece–“Torrey Pines.”
