Why Does Trump Want to Buy Greenland? 2019-08-21T22:50:23-07:00 Kermit Zarley

U.S. President Donald Trump wants the U.S. to buy Greenland. Why? Some people think it’s because Trump wants to cash in on all of Greenland’s rich natural resources. Greenland has some of the largest iron ore and zinc mines in the world.

Not so. Trump suspects that with global warming the only places that will be available in the world to build golf courses will be Greenland and the North Pole. About 80% of Greenland’s 811,000 square miles are ice-capped right now. But that ice is melting so fast that all that land will truly be green and therefore ready for lots of golf soon. But not just for its total population of 52,000 people, who are mostly Danish. Trump sees nothing but dollar signs in his eyes with Greenland: build the golf courses and watch all those golfing tourists come with their bags full of clubs and greenbacks.

Oh, you say Trump doesn’t believe in human-induced global warming! Really! Why, that real estate mogul just denies global warming in order to divert the attention of real estate moguls like him from buying just about the only land that won’t be burning up in the future due to global warming. Trump can’t buy the North Pole, so he figures Greenland is his only option left because his buddy Putin won’t sell him Siberia.

Yes, U.S. President Donald J. Trump really said the other day that he wants the U.S. to buy Greenland from Denmark. Greenland responded by bringing it to Trump’s short attention span that Denmark doesn’t own Greenland and that it has had self-rule since 1979. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rightly called Trump’s notion “absurd.” I suspect that a lot of anti-Trumpsters called Trump’s offer to make a deal a lot worse things than that.

Trump was about to go Denmark. But when Ms. Frederiksen said that, he called it off. Trumpsters thought he had second thoughts about going to the trouble of traveling. His critics thought it was because he wouldn’t get to watch TV’s Fox News. Neither were right. Her remark hurt the narcissist’s feelings.

Today, after Ms. Frederiksen said she was “sorry” that Mr. Trump had called off his Denmark trip, Trump called her “nasty.” (Trump likes to call women “nasty;” yet he never calls men that.) He explained, “I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do is say no, we wouldn’t be interested. She’s not talking to me. She’s talking to the United States of America. You don’t talk to the United States that way, at least under me.”

Ms. Frederiksen was quite diplomatic about this affair. She said, “This does not change the character of our good relations and we will continue our dialogue on how we can deal with challenges we are facing.” She added that the invitation to Mr. Trump “remains open.”

I think Ms. Frederiksen just got a taste of Donald J. Trump’s bullying, and she reacted magnificently. How do you think those Trump comments go down around the world?
