Today, President Donald Trump gave a rambling, one-hour plus speech to the Faith & Freedom Coalition. It’s supposedly a Christian organization that gets people to vote Republican.

Trump even got theological in his speech. He mentioned the “war on Christmas” and insinuated that one of his political enemies, a man of his own political party, may be in hell. Trump also said he’s “very happy” that John McCain, a man of Trump’s Republican Party, is “gone.” This cannot be taken any other way than that McCain is dead. Trump said of McCain and others who voted against Trump’s redo of the Affordable Care Act, “they’re gone now. They’ve gone on to greener pastures. Or perhaps less green pastures. But they’re gone . . . I’m very happy they’re gone.”

Jesus said in his Sermon on the Mount, “You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire” (Matthew 5.21-22 NRSV).

The Greek word here translated “fool” is more, which is similar to the Hebrew/Aramaic word raka or raca. Both the KJV and NIV actually translate more here as “Raca.” It means “fool” or “idiot” (Davies and Allison commentary on Matthew, p. 514).

I wonder what Jesus would have said after saying this in his Sermon on the Mount about a man who said he was “very happy” that a man was dead, a man who had served his country well in both the military and decades in the government’s legislature.

John McCain was an American war hero, captive in the Viet Nam War for five+ years, former U.S. senator from Arizona, and the Republican nominee who ran for president in 2008. He died last August of brain cancer. (I live in Arizona.) Trump as president has constantly bashed this man both when he lived–even disparaging his capture and imprisonment in Viet Nam, saying he liked those who didn’t get captured–and now that McCain is dead and can’t fight back.

I cannot believe America puts up with such a despicable man of character as its president as Donald Trump, who probably was a Draft Dodger—Draft Dodger—Draft Dodger.
