NoblePeacePrizeThis morning, the Norwegian Noble Committee announced that the winner of this year’s Noble Peace Prize is the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Committee chairwoman, Berit Reiss-Andersen, explained that the award recognizes ICAN’s work “to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its groundbreaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.” ICAN works with over 420 non-governmental organizations to try to achieve a world treaty banning nuclear weapons.

Beatrice Fihn is ICAN’s executive director. She surprisingly is a good-looking blond, 37 years old, and has BeatriceFihna law degree from the University of London. Fihn previously worked with the disarmament program of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She has written extensively on nuclear disarmament.

Ms. Fihn accepted the award and delivered an acceptance speech in which The World Council of Churches was the sponsor. She said U.S. President Donald Trump “puts a spotlight” on the dangers of nuclear weapons. “The election of President Donald Trump,” she added, “has made a lot of people feel very uncomfortable with the fact that he alone can authorize the use of nuclear weapons.” Surely she meant to authorize the use of U.S. nuclear weapons.

Two days ago, a friend of Beatrice Fihn tweeted her about NBC reporting Sunday that last summer, in a Pentagon meeting, U.S. Secretary of State called his boss, President Donald Trump, “a moron.” Fihn then tweeted her friend in response, “I guess it’s the first time I wholeheartedly support a statement by him.” So, she effectively did like Tillerson supposedly did by calling Trump a moron.

Fihn said this Noble Peace Prize represented a call to nuclear-armed states “to initiate serious negotiations with a view to the gradual, balanced and carefully monitored elimination of the almost 15,000 nuclear weapons in the world.” Nine nations are known for certain to possess these weapons.

This award comes right before U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to decide whether or not the U.S. will abandon the nuclear disarmament treaty that it signed–in 2015 under the Obama administration–with Iran and the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council (5P+1)–UK, France, Russia, and China plus the EU. In this treaty, Iran promises to abandon its efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Authorities claim Iran has been adhering to this agreement.

Yesterday, President Trump emerged from a Pentagon meeting and stood with several military people for a photo shoot just before a dinner. He then said, “You guys know what this represents. It’s the calm before the storm.” When the media then asked what he meant, he said, “You’ll find out.” It was typical Trump style of saying things about the future to keep people in suspense, like playing a game.

Experts suspect that Trump meant he will abandon the nuclear deal with Iran. Indeed, he had promised in his presidential campaign to do that if elected president. And the self-touted deal-maker had alleged it was “the worst deal ever.” Organizations such as ICAN would be very opposed to such a decision. Furthermore, it will further weaken the international reputation of the U.S., setting it forth as a nation that does not keep its word and thus cannot be trusted.

Regular readers of my blog know that I am strongly in favor of nuclear disarmament and that I interpret certain Bible prophecies to indicate that the entire world eventually will not only disarm itself of all nuclear weapons but all modern weapons as well, so the wars during the latter years of this age, at least, will be fought only with primitive weapons, such as swords, bows and arrows, spears, clubs, and such.
