LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

What movies do families want to watch during the Easter season? It depends on the age of the family member, of course, but new offerings and classics alike offer a variety of stories centered around the risen Christ.

New in Theaters

** Paul, Apostle of Christ*

This new motion picture follows two leaders of the early church: Luke, the physician who risks his life to visit Paul, and Paul himself, imprisoned by the emperor in Rome. Before Paul can be executed, Luke resolves to write a book detailing the beginnings of “The Way”—the church. Meanwhile, we see the aged Paul struggling as he waits for his appointment with death, pained by the shadows of his fractured past. Alone in the dark, he wonders if he has been forgotten . . . and if he has the strength to finish well.

“Two men struggle against a determined emperor and the frailties of the human spirit in order to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ and spread their message to the world.” Watch “The Heart of the Story” video in which cast and directors discuss their goals and focus of the show.

Mary Magdalene

Also releasing just before Easter (March 30, 2018), this film focuses on the controversial Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. Trailers and reviews seem to show a more accurate reflection of her true character—she is portrayed as one who struggled with demons before meeting Jesus rather than the erroneous reformed prostitute label she often wears. Joaquin Phoenix plays the character of Jesus. But reviews are mixed, so check it out online before you spring for tickets. It could be really good… or not.
