Ephesians 5:31-32
“For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the ecclesia.”
The Apostle Paul uses the metaphor of husbands and wives to illustrate a profound mystery concerning Christ and all humanity. By speaking of how the two become one flesh, he illustrates how Christ and humanity become one.
The metaphor serves to demonstrate how two beings can become one; even as Christ remains a unique concept apart from the concept of humanity, they are both unique expressions of the same thing. The man and the woman in this metaphor are not the same; in fact, their differences seem to suggest that they could never be “one”, and yet, in another sense, they do become one flesh – not only in the act of sexual union, but also in the spiritual and emotional sense.
We, also, are not one another, and yet, we are all united to Christ, and we all make up the corporeal body of Christ as we join together and work together in love towards a common goal.
The mystery is about more than Christ and Humanity. It’s also about how every single human being is also one with each other.
We embody Christ. Christ is enfleshed in us. Without Christ, we have no life. Christ has no body but ours. We are symbiotically connected to Christ and Christ is connected to all of us. What makes us one with each other is that Christ is in everyone. What makes us one with Christ is that we are the ones in whom Christ lives, moves, and has being, even as we have our life and being in Christ.
This is the “profound mystery” that Paul wants to communicate to us.
