Galatians 3:26-28
“For you are all God’s sons through the faithfulness within (of) the Anointed One Jesus; for as many of you as were baptized into the Anointed have clothed yourselves with the Anointed. There can be neither Judean nor Greek, there can be neither slave nor freeman, there cannot be male and female, for you are all one in the Anointed One Jesus.” (DBH)
This passage is best understood when considered from a chronological perspective. Paul’s epistle to the church in Galatia is one of the very first Christian writings we have record of, if not the very first. That means this letter to the church in Galatia was written before anyone had a copy of the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke or John. Copies of the sayings of Jesus (i.e. The Gospel of Thomas) undoubtedly were circulated in various forms, but for the most part, this letter from Paul was written and distributed very early in the Christian movement.
Why is this significant? Because the idea presented in this passage above was either one of the most scandalous concepts anyone in the Jesus movement had ever heard before, or it was so ubiquitous that almost no one batted an eye over it.
So, when the Apostle Paul makes the case that we “are all one in the Anointed One” and that separate identities are merely illusions we must learn to see beyond, it should either shock and scandalize these early Christians, or, more likely, it should reinforce a concept they were already well familiar with. Either way, when Paul makes this statement, it seems to have been received as an accepted reality that “there can be neither Judean nor Greek…neither slave nor freeman…(and) there cannot be male and female…” because of our radical Oneness in Christ.
Considering the matter-of-fact tone in which the Apostle makes this statement, it is more reasonable to assume that this concept of shared divinity and shared humanity was already an accepted truth at the core of the Christian faith. If it were truly a new idea, one would expect Paul to spend time proving his point or explaining his rationale. Instead, he references this more as a reminder of something they are already aware of: We are all one in Christ.
Now, some may want to argue that there is a conditional statement in this verse that limits this “oneness” with Christ and with each other to those who have been “baptized into the Anointed.” But, as we have already seen over and over again in Paul’s writings, he firmly believes that whatever is true of Christ (the Anointed) is true of all of us. So, if Christ has been crucified, we have all been crucified. If Christ has been resurrected, we have all been resurrected. And if Christ has been baptized, then we have all been baptized into the Anointed. That means, we are all “clothed with the Anointed,” as Paul says above.
Placing conditions on the Oneness of Christ with all humanity is not only logically impossible, but it is also entirely contradictory to Paul’s established position that “Christ is all and is in all,” as we shall see in the next chapter.
There is no such thing as a selective Oneness between Christ and humanity. Either Christ is in everyone, or Christ is in none of us.
