2 Corinthians 1:3-7
“Praise be to the God and Father of Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.”
Paul’s conviction of eternal Oneness is expressed here in his description of how our sufferings result in the comfort of those we are connected to in Christ. Whenever we suffer, Paul argues, the comfort we receive from God flows outward to comfort anyone we encounter who is in need of comforting.
As we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, our comfort is also magnified exponentially through Christ (who is in us) to everyone who is also in Christ, and in us.
This entire process is only possible if everyone is in Christ, and Christ is in everyone. Nothing breaks the eternal flow of God’s comfort for us as it spreads outward to drench everyone who lives and moves and has their being in Christ (which is to say, everyone).
Because of this shared Divinity and shared Humanity, everyone, everywhere has access to God’s comfort, even as they share in Christ’s sufferings.
One of the difficult truths we have to come to grips with is that God never promises to lead us out of the valley of the shadow of death. Everyone suffers. As Jesus said, “In this world, you will have trouble” (John 16:33, emphasis mine). There is no promise that we will avoid suffering or escape troubles in this life. It’s one of the byproducts of being human.
But what we do have is the promise that, as we go through these troubles and sufferings, God goes with us. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, God is with me…” (Psalm 23). “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
Because we are one with God and with Christ, even our worst seasons of suffering can become opportunities for awakening to our Oneness with the Divine, and with each other. As we suffer, we know that God and Christ are suffering alongside us, and that the comfort we receive from God can become an unstoppable flood of endless comfort that flows from the heart of God, through us, to everyone around us.
This means we are all connected to a continuous ebb and flow of Divine comfort and Oneness that never ends. A river of comfort that begins with God, flows through all of us, and spreads outward into the future for all eternity.
