1 Corinthians 15:45-49

“So it has also been written, ‘The first man, Adam came to be a living soul,’ and the last Adam (Christ), a life-making spirit. But not the spiritual first, but rather the physical, the spiritual thereafter. The first man out of the earth – earthly; the second man (Christ) out of heaven. As the earthly man, so also those who are earthly; and as the heavenly, so also those who are heavenly; and, just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly man (Christ).” (DBH)

Once again, the Apostle Paul compares and contrasts the Christ with Adam. Here, he focuses on the image of Christ in all of us who are born from the seed of Adam, (which is to say, everyone).

Whereas Adam “came to be a living soul,” (and therefore, all of us, also, became living souls), Christ came as “a life-making spirit,” (and therefore, all of us now are made alive because of Christ).

As Paul says elsewhere, “You have been raised (resurrected) with Christ.” (Col. 3:1) Therefore, because Christ has been raised, we all have been raised and infused with the resurrection life of Christ.

Adam had a certain kind of life that was passed on to everyone who was born of the lineage of Adam. This life was merely the physical life that animates our bodies and allows us to exist on the earth. But, through Christ, we have inherited a very different quality of life.

This Christ-like life is spiritual. It comes from the place where God dwells. And, in the same way that everyone on Earth inherits physical life through Adam, we all have also inherited spiritual life through Christ. No one has to choose to accept the life of Adam. We all partake of that life because of who we are: the children of Adam. Similarly, no one has to choose to accept the life of Christ. We all partake of the resurrection life because of who we are: the children of the heavenly man (Christ).

As the Apostle Paul said earlier:

“Therefore, just as sin entered into the cosmos through one man (Adam), and death through sin, so also death pervaded all humanity, whereupon all sinned…As the transgression, however, not so the grace bestowed: for if by the transgression of one (Adam) the many died, so much more did God’s grace and the gift in grace of the one man Jesus the Anointed overflow to the many…So, then, just as by one transgression unto condemnation for all human beings, so also by one act of righteousness unto rectification of life for all human beings…For, just as by the heedlessness of the one man (Adam) the many were rendered sinners*, so also by the obedience of the one (Christ) the many will be rendered righteous.”*** (Romans 5:12;15;18-19, DBH, emphasis mine)

All are in Adam, and all are in Christ. What was done in Adam is undone in Christ.

Because “Christ is all and is in all.” (Col. 3:11)
