The Mind of Christ
1 Corinthians 2:15-16
“The person with the Spirit makes judgements about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgements for, ‘Who has known the mind of God so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.
There are a handful of verses in the New Testament that are truly breathtaking, but, sadly, most people are oblivious to the actual meaning of those texts. This is one of those verses.
Let’s take it one step at a time so we can really understand what the Apostle Paul is trying to say here.
First, he begins by saying: “The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things.” This, in itself, isn’t very shocking. But the next sentence starts to build on that initial idea by suggesting that “…such a person is not subject merely to human judgements..”, meaning that, because one is filled with the Spirit of God, their ability to judge things is elevated beyond what the average person is capable of.
But why? Well, here’s where it gets very interesting.
Paul makes an unexpected detour in his argument to remind us of a verse from Isaiah, which asks, “Who has known the mind of God so as to instruct him?” (40:13).
Why is this verse unexpected? Because it’s from a passage in Isaiah’s text where the prophet pauses to ask the rhetorical question “Who has known the mind of God?” as a way of saying, “God’s ways are higher than our ways,” and “No one can know what God is thinking.”
However, in this context, where Paul has already started to suggest that those who are filled with the Spirit of God are capable of “making judgements about all things…(and not)…merely human judgements…”, the next verse is when our jaws should drop to the floor as he says, “But we have the mind of Christ.”
This statement qualifies his previous assertion that those who are awakened to the Spirit of Divinity within are capable of extraordinary things. But here, he dares to answer Isaiah’s rhetorical question, “Who has known the mind of God?” with an answer that boldly proclaims, “We have!”
Do you see it? Paul’s argument is that those who are awakened to the Spirit of Christ have the same mind as Christ. We can know the deeper mysteries of God. We can see behind the veil. We can hear the voice of God, know the thoughts of God, and share the wisdom of God.
This parallels what Jesus says to his disciples in the Gospel of John:
“You are my friends if you do what I say. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (15:14-15)
In other words, because Jesus has called us friends, we can know the master’s business, and now everything that he knew is available to us, right now. Jesus had the mind of Christ. This is how he learned everything from the Father. And now, we have the mind of Christ, too.
What could be more scandalous than this? Especially in a world where those who claim to follow the ways of Jesus teach everyone that they are worthless, shameful, wretched sinners whose thoughts are evil all of the time.
Don’t believe those lies. Embrace the words of Jesus and the Apostle Paul. You are not slaves. You are the friends of God. You have the mind of Christ. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is alive in you. (Romans 8:11)
Who has known the mind of God?
We have!
