Hekate: December And The Winter Solstice

Last updated on: June 14, 2020 at 3:13 pm   By Cyndi Brannen

The darkness breathes into December, forcing some to run for the light while others embrace it. The Hekate of December urges us to follow her into this time, to explore our depths, delve into her mysteries and be reborn. Here I find myself with those that remain, the moon, her poisons, and her powerful winged creatures. If you're here with me, know that this is not the easy path, but it is the truth. You are a warrior-witch. The world of spirits awaits those who answer Hekate's call. All of us sustained by the breath of her darkness. Hail the Hekate of December! Read more

Can Witches Be Lightworkers?

Last updated on: June 14, 2020 at 9:09 pm   By Cyndi Brannen

Light workers might have their place in the world, but it's not within witchcraft. There's little overlap between light workers and witches, except for an emphasis on psychic abilities and healing. Witchcraft is about death, whether to harness an animal spirit or the power of personal transformation. Witches are not light workers. We are death walkers, wandering in the shadows where healing and true magick are found. Read more

For a goddess with such a long and complex history, you would think there would be one giant tome all about Hekate, including how to practice her witchcraft. Maybe it's because of that history that there isn't one. I like to think that Hekate enjoys that there's no single source for everything we need to know about her. Hopefully, it won't irritate her too much that I've this compiled this list of the 13 texts every Hekatean Witch should read. Read more

Hekate & November

Last updated on: June 14, 2020 at 9:58 pm   By Cyndi Brannen

November is Hekate's month. There are two nights honoring her, Night of Hekate of the Underworld and Night of Hekate of the Crossroads. The long nights provide her witches' with much darkness in which we can work our magick and honor our queen. This is the time of the year for death walking, whether as a guide assisting the restless dead on their way or through exploring the parts of ourselves that long to be let go. The season of her poisons that banish and bless. Gone are the flowers of the sun, herein remain the eternal poisons of aconite, foxglove and more. This is the time for dedicating oneself to Hekate or performing a self-initiation ritual as one of her witches. Hail the Hekate of November! Read more

As a Canadian, I've been watching everything that is going on south of the border with increasing alarm. Our two nations are deeply intertwined in so many ways, from the economy to culture. Here are some ideas for magical and mundane ways we non-Americans can support our friends in the US during these troubling times. Most importantly: remind them to vote in the upcoming elections on November 6.  Read more
