Archdiocesan Employee Accused of Sexual Abuse Is Fired, Arrested

Last updated on: January 14, 2015 at 11:00 am   By Kathy Schiffer

A sad story today from the Archdiocese of Detroit:  Joseph Peter Sturza, who worked as director of admissions at Austin Catholic Academy in Ray Township as well as serving as a youth minister at St. Isidore Catholic parish in Macomb Township, has been arrested for child sexual abusive activity. Sturza apparently was popular with his neighbors, who described him as “a great guy” who was “always willing to help.”  He also had earned the trust of parents, and some on-line comments insist... Read more

Ferguson, MO: Violence and Destruction Are Not the Answer

Last updated on: December 26, 2014 at 6:41 pm   By Kathy Schiffer

Ferguson, MO has erupted into a firestorm of protests, following the announcement that white police officer Darren Wilson will not be indicted for the shooting death of black teenager Michael Brown. News outlets and social media are replete with dramatic coverage of burning buildings and police cars and angry crowds.  Michael Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, rallied crowds outside the courtroom with a hate-filled, expletive-laden speech, as tempers flared and talk erupted of “getting justice” by burning the city down.  (Because of my... Read more

Buon Appetito! Swiss Guard Authors Cookbook of Papal Favorites

Last updated on: December 26, 2014 at 6:42 pm   By Kathy Schiffer

Pope Francis’ favorite dishes from his native Argentina are among the recipes included in Buon Appetito, a just-published cookbook by 24-year-old David Geisser.  Also included are some favorites of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II. Geisser should know:  As a member of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, he has had the opportunity to ask top Vatican officials about the pontiffs’ favorite foods. Some of Pope Francis’ favorites featured in the new cookbook are empanadas; roast sirloin, known in Argentina as “colita de... Read more

“Average Is Beautiful”: The Anti-Barbie Doll Goes on Sale This Week in the U.S.

Last updated on: December 26, 2014 at 6:43 pm   By Kathy Schiffer

Just in time for Christmas:  The “Lammily” doll, a doll that is short, brunette, has an average body shape and can, if you prefer, come complete with acne or cellulite. Parents and other concerned adults have long criticized the long, lanky Barbie for her unrealistic proportions.  Now a 26-year-old graphic designer, Nickolay Lamm, has developed a doll that won’t set young girls on the path to anorexia by teaching them that “ultra-thin” is the only acceptable body type. Lamm created his... Read more

Iconic Cross on Ireland’s Highest Peak Has Been Cut Down

Last updated on: December 26, 2014 at 6:44 pm   By Kathy Schiffer

Carrountoohil, the central peak of the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks range, stands 1,038 feet high and is Ireland’s tallest mountain peak.   For almost 40 years, a five-metre (16 foot) steel cross  has been a familiar landmark atop Carrountoohil.  It took more than 100 men to erect the heavy cross, which was brought to the mountaintop in several pieces, then assembled on site.  RTÉ,RTE, Ireland’s national broadcast network, filmed the installation of the cross live in 1976. Since that time, the Carrountoohil cross has been... Read more

Anna and Joachim Present Their Daughter Mary at the Temple (How Do We Know That?)

Last updated on: January 14, 2015 at 3:34 pm   By Kathy Schiffer

NOVEMBER 21 MEMORIAL OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Where in the Bible do we learn that the Virgin Mary’s parents were named Anna and Joachim? Can’t figure out what chapter and verse it is?  That’s because it’s not really in the Bible.  Saint Anna and Saint Joachim (sometimes spelled “Ioacim”) show up in a separate book called the Protoevangelium of James or, more simply, the Gospel of James. Not one of the canonical gospels, the Gospel of James is considered apocryphal—not part of the... Read more

So Bill Murray Likes the Latin Mass? Well, His Sister Nancy, a Catholic Nun, Likes Catherine of Siena

Last updated on: December 26, 2014 at 6:45 pm   By Kathy Schiffer

Everyone’s talking today about Bill Murray, after he said that he liked the Traditional Latin Mass.  The actor was in Toronto promoting his new comedy “St. Vincent”, and he talked with The Guardian about the recent canonizations, sacred music and the Latin Mass. Speaking about the liturgy, Murray tells The Guardian reporter Catherine Shoard: “…I tend to disagree with what they call the new mass. I think we lost something by losing the Latin. Now if you go to a Catholic mass even just in Harlem... Read more

Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron has refused permission for a pro-gay rights speaker, head of an organization which has been censured by the Vatican, to speak at a Detroit-area parish. Francis DeBernardo, executive director of the Maryland-based New Ways Ministry, was scheduled to speak at Christ the King parish in northwest Detroit on Saturday, November 22.  He was to address the Fortunate Families support group, an organization of parents and others who have family members who experience same-sex attraction.
