There were crashing footsteps in the brush now, George turned and looked toward them. “Go on, George. When we gonna do it?” “Gonna do it soon.” “Me an’ you.” “You … an’ me. Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no more trouble. “The Poor You Will Always Have With You”: An Atheist Misunderstands Pope Francis, Again
Last updated on: August 20, 2015 at 7:45 pm By Kathy Schiffer
Matthew O’Neil, writing on Dan Arel’s Danthropology blog over on the Atheist Channel, has written what he considers to be a scathing indictment of Pope Francis which he titles “Pope Francis fails to lead a Christian life.” “[T]he person who leads the Catholic faith,” O’Neil writes, “…does little to actually support the destitute, and, instead, redistributes the wealth within the empire of Catholicism. All the while using small measures to save face.” O’Neil regards the Pope’s symbolic gestures as so much window dressing.... Read more

Will Michigan Legislature Protect Religious Freedom of Adoption Agencies?
Last updated on: March 18, 2015 at 3:08 am By Kathy Schiffer
The Michigan House of Representatives will vote this afternoon on legislation which would allow faith-based adoption agencies to continue to provide services in the state. House Bills 4188-4190 would allow Catholic and other faith-based adoption agencies to abide by the teachings of their faith, and to refuse to place children into homes with same-sex or unmarried couples. As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments next month on whether same-sex “marriage” should be legalized in Michigan and other states, the proposed legislation... Read more

For the last 29 years, the faithful and the curious have braved the harsh Michigan winter on one Saturday in February or March to step onto the frozen surface of Little Traverse Bay, near Bayfront Park in Petoskey. There was a record crowd this year: According to the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department, 2,021 viewers made the hike on the frozen lake March 7. Sgt. St. Patrick’s Feast Day Has Been Hijacked–Don’t Give Away the Parade, Too!
Last updated on: March 17, 2015 at 1:21 am By Kathy Schiffer
TODAY IS ST. PATRICK’S DAY, and in New York City, there’s going to be some kind of a parade or something. I’m kidding. Everybody knows that America’s largest, oldest and most famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on March 17 in New York City. Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day–or so they say!–and for 253 years, New Yorkers have been celebrating the feast of the Catholic saint by marching a mile and a half down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.... The Detroit Free Press has a great story today that I’d like you to see: It’s a video interview with Fr. Bob McCabe, a local pastor who photographs those in the margins of society. Father Bob is pastor of St. Pius X parish in the downriver Detroit suburb of Southgate. He’s been a familiar face around the Archdiocese of Detroit for years, known for his photographic skill and for his pastoral work. This interview brings front-page attention to an important... Last updated on: March 15, 2015 at 10:27 am By Kathy Schiffer
Antrel Rolle didn’t know what to do. The former New York Giants safety had become a free agent, and he had to decide which NFL team he should sign with: the Bears or the Redskins. So one Sunday night, just before going to sleep, he said a prayer. According to WFAN Radio, Rolle prayed, “God, I pray that you just give me a level head. I pray that you just give me a sign to lead me in the right... Read more

Will Wrongly Convicted Fr. Gordon MacRae Finally Go Free?
Last updated on: March 15, 2015 at 8:12 am By Kathy Schiffer
Father Gordon J. MacRae may finally be freed soon, after serving more than twenty years in prison. Father MacRae, whose story is told on the blog These Stone Walls, has long been believed to be innocent of the alleged crimes for which he was convicted in 1994. This week, though, he will be back in court–where his case will be reviewed with fresh eyes. The clergy abuse scandal was fresh in the news, and there was a lot of anger toward... Read more
