Do you remember when the HHS Mandate first made news across America?  Early news reports seemed to suggest that this, the issue of whether to provide free contraception and abortifacients, was an issue which divided men and women.  Opponents of the Mandate, according to the popular wisdom, were conservative, celibate churchmen who hated women and who didn’t understand or care about women’s needs.  Proponents, a group which included all women and some reasonable and caring men, were victims of cruel and senseless discrimination.

In an effort to set the record straight, two women set out to show the media and the public that the liberals’ worldview was not shared by all women, and that some—in fact, many—women disagreed with the government’s intrusion into the religious freedom of its citizens.  The organization founded by law professor Helen Alvare and religious liberty attorney Kim Daniels, two pro-life women, was called Women Speak For Themselves.

On Thursday, August 1, Women Speak For Themselves will be protesting against the HHS Contraception and Abortion Mandate in front of the White House.  Helen Alvare is asking for help:  If you are in the D.C. area, turn out for the rally.  If you’re not, consider whether you can help by writing a letter to the politics or religion reporter at your local newspaper.  Ask them to consider running an article about the event.  And of course, pray for their success.

Following is the press release from the WSFT.  More information will be coming.  Now let’s act:  Ready, set, GO….

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington D.C.– Women Speak For Themselves (WSFT), a women’s religious freedom group, will demonstrate against the HHS Contraception and Abortion Mandate in Lafayette Square Washington DC, on August 1, 2013 from 11:30-12:30 pm.

The Mandate requires religious individuals and institutions to insure, without any co-pay, contraception and some drugs which can act as early abortifacients. It was scheduled to go into effect August  1. The final rule pushes the date back to January 1, 2014.

WSFT is a grassroots coalition of more than 40,000 women from many religions, political backgrounds, and states, who stand for religious freedom and against the simplistic notion that women’s freedom is grounded in contraception and abortion.

The hour long demonstration will be led by Helen Alvaré, George Mason Law Professor and WSFT founder, and will include speeches from women members of WSFT who are traveling to Washington DC for the event. Following the event, members of WSFT hope to meet with Members of Congress.

Members of the press are invited to attend and should make their attendance known to WSFT via Meg McDonnell, WSFT communications director Meg@ chiaroscuroinstitute.org.
