Thanks, nearly naked female celebrities at Monday’s Met Gala in New York City, for reminding us why men are considered people, while women are often thought of as just decorative objects.

The annual event, which marks the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s yearly Costume Institute exhibit, is a night for taking fashion to the edge — and sometimes right over it.

From Defamer:

Last night’s Met Gala was a real yawn. The theme—China: Through the Looking Glass—threatened to be a hot pot of tacky appropriation, but instead celebrities erred on the side of average, dressing in clothes that were obviously unfit and much too unambitious for the fête of the year.

The trend, if one were forced, with a loaded curling iron to the head, to define it, was either DRESS TOO MUCH or dress not enough. On the one hand, there were hordes of famous people draped in enough fabric to keep them roasting warm on a long winter night traversing the Yukon. On the flip, there were a number of stars feeling loose and fancy-free, showing up to the Met Gala like it was a formal pool party. You can’t win with these guys, can you? Here they are in order of increasing white tie nakedness.

From the Catechism on modesty:

Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.

I’m not not a prude, but there’s a balance to be found between wearing an entire fabric store (which, in the case of Rihanna’s royal train, does allow one to take up more space and thereby appear more important) and having one’s dress consist largely of strategically placed sequins.

There’s an entire psychological study in this collection of images. I’d love to have been in the room the moment that Sarah Jessica Parker looked at herself in the mirror and said, “Yeah, having the flames of Hades shooting out of my head is totally on fleek.”
