A neighbor and I sat out in the backyard last night talking about all sorts of things. She shared the story of when her youngest child would climb up on a footstool, stare into the mirror and say, “I have rosy red lips and white skin. Guess who I look like?”

Sara was only 2 or 3 at the time.

“Well,” her daddy would tease, “Cinderella?”

“NO! Daddy!” Sara would pout. “I am not Cinderella!”

“I have ROSY RED LIPS!”

“Ah, Sleeping Beauty?” her mother replied.

“Yes!!” Sara said. “I look like Sleeping Beauty!”

“Yes, I can see it now,” her daddy said.

Years ago a fellow I was dating gave me a B.C. cartoon strip torn from the newspaper. In it the prince stands under the tall stone tower and yells up: “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Throw down thy hair!”

But instead of tossing her long golden locks out the window for her prince,

Rapunzel tosses a hare out the window.

To which the prince responds, “This could be a fun chick.”

I kept that comic all these years, even though the fellow didn’t turn out to be my very own prince, because I think that’s the storybook character that best defines me.

What about you?
Which storybook character do you envision yourself as?
