Don’t Even Think About It

Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Purity.
Pure.
White as snow.
Holy.
Clean.
Fresh.
Beautiful.
Clear.
Unblemished.
A culture of purity.
A movement.
Where we adults taught the young people the importance of it all.
How to “stay pure”.
How to think pure thoughts.
Find a pure partner.
Keep a pure heart.
Stay this way for Jesus.
Sex?
Don’t even think about it.
Not even a hint.
Not.even.a.hint.
Kiss it all goodbye.
Kiss sex goodbye.
Kiss holding hands goodbye.
Better than all of that?
Just kiss dating goodbye.
C-ya.
Not only on the outside.
Make sure you are pure on the inside as well.
Don’t even think it.
Don’t give your heart away.
Keep your heart to yourself.
Guard it.
Save it for your future husband/wife.
You know, the one you aren’t thinking about.
Why?
Because.
Hearts get broken.
With the opposite sex.
Before it’s time to be married.
Once you are married?
Well then, have at it.
Give your heart away.
To the one you are married to.
If you do all of this?
The promise is bliss.
Wait.
Not from God.
The promise isn’t from God.
It’s from us.
The ones telling you to do this.
Not that we did.
It was impossible.
And our hearts got broken.
And we want your hearts to be in tact.
Whole.
Never mind that a friend could actually break your heart.
Or your pastor could break it.
Or someone in your own family.
Don’t worry about those kinds of brokenness.
Only the sexy kind of brokenness matters.
So focus on this.
Put all your time and energy into this.
Think about it all the time.
Like a big pink elephant.
Think about how you aren’t supposed to think about it.
Wear a ring to remind you not to think about it.
Wear it all the time.
So everyone knows you aren’t thinking about it.
Sign a commitment card.
Pray about it all the time.
Oh Lord, help me not to think about it.
Don’t think about it.
Don’t think about it.
Don’t think about it.
Dangit.
Why am I thinking about it?
I should spend more time trying not to think about it.
Less time thinking of others.
Less time dreaming of ways to help others.
Less time serving others.
I won’t think about joy, peace, love, patience, kindness.
I can’t.
I’m too busy thinking about not thinking about sex.
Or even any kind of relationship with someone I’m attracted to.
Nope.
Don’t be attracted.
Don’t look.
Keep your head down.
Blinders on.
No eye contact.
That’s for sure.
And if you do have any feelings?
Keep them to yourself.
At least pretend you are “pure”.
As long as it looks like you are?
Well then, that’s about all we can ask of you.
Don’t think about it.
Don’t think about it.
Don’t think about it.
Dangit.
