Why asking “Is hell real?” is like asking, “Do unicorns speak Leprechaun?”
Last updated on: October 10, 2016 at 5:26 pm By John Shore
Lots of Christians today are asking the question, “Is hell real?” But that’s like a football coach asking his players if they can dunk the next ball. Wrong question. Wrong game. Missing the point. Here’s something I find acutely unpleasant: conversations that ostensibly are about answering a question to which, in fact, there is no knowable answer. Getting stuck in a conversation like that transmogrifies my medulla oblongata into a crack-snorting hamster on a wheel. So, to state something so... Read more

My Wife; My Blog; My Deep Affection For You Guys (And a Possible Foot Rub For Me!)
Last updated on: May 20, 2011 at 7:23 pm By John Shore
So I ended up cutting some stuff from the first third of Patheos.com: Why I Turned Them Down, But Guess Others Won’t, one of my two posts from yesterday. (The other post — the better one — is What Jesus Really Meant by the Story of Lazarus). I was ultimately sort of basically too shy to publish what I cut; plus, I felt it sort of rendered the post too bifurcated. (That’s right: I roll with the big words that... Read more

What Jesus Really Meant by the Story of Lazarus
Last updated on: January 8, 2014 at 5:40 pm By John Shore
The story of Lazarus is no more about hell being a real place than the story of the Three Little Pigs is about farm animals being architects. Read more

Guess What This Object Is, and Win a Book or T-shirt!
Last updated on: May 15, 2011 at 9:45 pm By John Shore
This weekend I came across this object for sale in a thrift store. Be the first to correctly identify what it is, and I’ll send you your choice of an autographed and inscribed copy of either of my two books, or a JohnShore.com tee-shirt. Contest closes Wednesday morning, May 18, 8 a.m. PST. Mucho fun was had when I did this before here, and another time here. No one correctly guessed what either of those two items was—and I’m not...
