Vendors Stiffed by Crystal Cathedral
Last updated on: March 25, 2010 at 10:11 pm By John Shore
The Los Angeles Times is running a story, Vendors say Crystal Cathedral owes them tens of thousands of dollars, about how the 10,000-member Crystal Cathedral is so financially strapped it has failed to pay nearly $100,000 to the vendors responsible for producing the mega-church’s mega-popular Christmas and Easter pageants. (Both shows have been canceled for this year; it would have been the Christmas show’s 30th anniversary.) (more…) Read more

Four sure and easy ways to deepen your relationship with God
Last updated on: March 25, 2010 at 5:35 am By John Shore
For those times when you’re in the mood for a little Divine Interaction, may I suggest the following four easy things to do? They’re simple—but they work, and always have. I personally believe that God is constantly and forever waiting for everyone and anyone to simply ask how they can deepen their personal relationship with him/her/it. God has a lot of answers, but for that particular question, he/she/it really has an answer. And if you sincerely and deeply ask God... Read more

My Sordid Affair With Fibber McGee
Last updated on: March 24, 2010 at 8:37 am By John Shore
Friends, family members, people I don’t know all that well, my wife’s lawyer, members of the web press, Geraldo, and Tiger Woods back there hiding behind an issue of Clubbin’ magazine: Recently, allegations have surfaced that for the last six months I have been having an extramarital affair with Fibber McGee, a waitress at Gutter Shots, the cocktail lounge inside the bowling alley where I bowl with my team, Balls of Fury. (more…) Read more

Christians Smoking Pot?
Last updated on: March 23, 2010 at 11:22 am By John Shore
In response to When Jesus, Drugs, and Lawrence Welk Collide, a reader wrote me to ask: “What’s your view on Christians smoking pot? Because the Bible never actually references it, and it is a natural thing given to the earth. Just wondering.” (more…) Read more

When Jesus, Drugs, and Lawrence Welk Collide
Last updated on: August 18, 2014 at 10:19 pm By John Shore
What do these people think they’re singing about? (And, sadly, it’s clear that the gentleman introducing the singers is flat-out stoned. And as the song goes on, is the woman bouncing up and down just a tad … too rhythmically? No, you’re right. Probably not. Of course not. Never mind.) Read more

Small Talk is For Small Minds. Think About It.
Last updated on: March 22, 2010 at 8:30 am By John Shore
From a recent New York Times article, Talk Deeply, Be Happy?: “People who spend more of their day having deep discussions and less time engaging in small talk seem to be happier, said Matthias Mehl, a psychologist at the University of Arizona who published a study on the subject.” It’s about time the larger world became aware of what I’ve known for years, which is that small talk is for small minds. It’s why I’ve always made a point of... Read more

In The Final Moments of My 51st Year
Last updated on: March 20, 2010 at 11:00 pm By John Shore
As I write this, I will be fifty-two years old in exactly one half-hour. That means that by the time I actually finish this I’ll have been fifty-two for about two hours, because these days I have trouble seeing the keyboard, and oftentimes forget what I’m saying right in the middle of … something. Plus, I’m emotionally shaken. It’s not easy going from fifty-one to fifty-two even though it’s unavoidable without actually dying, and let’s not get carried away. (more…) Read more

Sugar swings. Serve some.
Last updated on: March 18, 2010 at 1:54 pm By John Shore
I came across this ad in in a copy of LIFE magazine from 1966 that I bought at a thrift store (for two dollars). Had to share it. “Play safe with your young ones. Make sure they get sugar every day.” That message, from Sugar Information, Inc. I wonder whatever happened to that company? Read more
