In some states, a deer crossing sign serves as a warning. But if you live in South Dakota, Iowa, or Michigan, the signs serve as foreshadowing for your inevitable fate.

Using its claims data and state licensed driver counts from the Federal Highway Administration, State Farm calculated the chances of a motorist striking a deer over the next 12 months.

If you live in West Virginia you are pretty much guaranteed (1-40 chance a year) to have to pick a doe out of your car’s fender sometime during your lifetime.

The state in which deer-vehicle mishaps are least likely: Hawaii (1 in 6,801). The odds of a driver in Hawaii colliding with a deer between now and 12 months from now are approximately equal to the odds that any one person will be struck by lightning during his or her lifetime.
