Worship Leads to Missions

Worship Leads to Missions is a simple thought Lectionary reflection from Psalm 96:1-13  about the relationship between worship and missions.

Psalm 96:1-13

“Missions in not the ultimate goal of the Church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship does not.” – John Piper

Worship leads to missions. Worship and missions are related purposes for the Christian. There are five purposes which every Christian is to fulfill: fellowship, discipleship, ministry, missions and worship.

Yet worship is uniquely connected to missions. Only Christians can truly worship God. Only Christians who truly sing praises to God (Psalm 96:1-2) understand that we have a call to “declare His glory among the nations” (Psalm 96:3).

God is great and expects our worship (Psalm 96:4-9). God also expects us to share Jesus with others. He wants Christians to “say” to the nations a word about God and point people to Him (Psalm 96:10).  We are called to remind people of Jesus who will return to judge the Earth and rule the world (Psalm 96:13).

Worship leads to missions which then leads to worship. Worship and missions form this cycle in which our declaring to God Who He is leading us to declare to the world Who God is. Worship is not a selfish cycle of promotional songs which we enjoy a concert. Instead, worship is learning to be in the presence of God declaring our allegiance to Him. We tell others that God is the Person Whom we follow. Worship is a mission statement. Mission is a worship statement. They are directly linked to one another.

Prayer: God, I praise You because You show me how great You are to me. I want to show others Who You are. May You help me as I worship You to declare Your glory to the nations.
