Happiness Comes From God

Happiness Comes From God is a simple thought reflection from Psalm 127 on the work and family can be pursuits of happiness, but only if they come from God.

November 5, 2015 Year B
Happiness comes from God. In this psalm, we see two examples of happiness: work and family. Each of these examples are examples of happiness only because God is involved. When God is not involved, the result is in vain.

First, work is a happy endeavor because God is involved. Without God, the builder builds in vain (Psalm 127:1). Without God, the watchman or security guard stay alert for no reason (Psalm 127:1). Work can be stressful. But with God involved, you accomplish a good full day’s work and you get the rest you need at the end of the day (Psalm 127:2).

Second, having a family is a happy endeavor because God is involved. Having children is a source of happiness that comes from God. Sons continue the family line and children are considered a reward – more valuable than money (Psalm 127:3). Children are so valuable that even a full set of many children can bring happiness to a family. They bring honor to the family name – but only if God is head of the family (Psalm 127:4-5).

One might get the impression that if one does not have work or family, one is unloved by God. But that is not true. The emphasis in these verses is the fact that without God, all of these pursuits – work and family – are futile and in vain, and they will not lead one’s happiness. Because happiness (no matter what one pursues) can come only from God.

Prayer: God, You are my source of happiness. Thank You that You give me work and family. Please remind me that these pursuits of happiness come only from You.
