X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

MOVIE SUMMARY:

When a cure is found to treat mutations, lines are drawn amongst the X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier, and the Brotherhood, a band of powerful mutants organized under Xavier’s former ally, Magneto.

MOVIE THEMES:

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) is the third film in an X-Men trilogy. X-Men (2000) introduced the idea of mutants and their eventual conflict with humans. X2: X-Men United (2003) continued the conflict between humans and mutants. In X2, the X-Men band together to find a mutant assassin who has made an attempt on the President’s life, while the Mutant Academy is attacked by military forces.

Persecution against minority group

Throughout the film, mutants are being persecuted. Humans misunderstand them and try to kill those they don’t understand. The United States government develops a serum that reverses the mutations in these mutants. They ask for mutants to voluntary take this serum. Magneto leads a group of mutants to rise up and fight against this form of persecution. As a result, the government develops a weaponized form for this cure.

Power

Throughout the film, the manipulation of power is explored. Every mutant can manipulate some form of power. Storm can manipulate weather. Wolverine can regenerate. Magneto can manipulate metal. Professor can read minds and locate people. Jean Grey is a Class-5 mutant. Unlike the other mutants, Jean has unlimited power. She is unable to control it. As a result, she kills Cyclops, and Professor X.

Jean Grey has been a character who has shown the use of power and how difficult it can be to control it. In X2, Jean sacrifices herself to save other mutants. At the end of the film, it is implied that she will return. In this film, Jean is unable to control the use of her powers. In the climactic scene, Wolverine confronts Jean and is able to stop her rage. However, it comes at the cost of killing her.

One such mutant has the ability to change mutants into humans, As a result, the United States government tries to control this power by developing a cure for mutants. In the end, Raven and Magneto lose their powers by being shot with a weaponized form of this cure. In the climactic scene, Wolverine confronts Jean and is able to stop her rage. However, it comes at the cost of killing her.

QUESTIONS:

  1. God’s people have been persecuted throughout history. How does God help the persecuted? How will God help His people in the future?
  2. God gives us spiritual gifts to use His power in our lives (Romans 12:6-8, 1 Peter 4:10-11, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Ephesians 4:11-16, 2 Timothy 1:6-7). What spiritual gifts has God given you?

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) is a Christian movie review about the final film in the X-Men trilogy. Mutants take their last stand against the humans.
