Lenten Reflection #2: Jesus Came
“In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.” (Mark 1:9, HCSB)
Jesus came.
Jesus came from eternity into our world. However, He also came from a specific place. He came from Nazareth. Yes, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a royal city. However, He came to us from Nazareth – a local place. When Jesus came to us, He didn’t come to say: “I come from a very important city so you have to listen to Me.” He came from a local, small, town, raised in a poor family. He came from a place of which many of us can identity.
He did not come for a select few people who could afford to hear Him. He came for the masses who needed Him. Some of the disciples were not sure if anything good could come from Nazareth.
“Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law (and so did the prophets ): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!” “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered.” (John 1:45–46, HCSB)
The answer to that question is: Come and see. Jesus came to see us, share with us, be with us and save us. He wants us to come and see Him.
