My Future Inheritance

My Future Inheritance is a simple thought from Romans 8:14 about the future inheritance I can receive in a forever family because i have been adopted by God.

Don’t you like to get an inheritance? I do. You know that when someone dies, the surviving members get an inheritance. An inheritance is something that is left behind for others. Perhaps it is a tract of land, a house, or something as small as a ring, or necklace. There are three ways to receive an inheritance in these verses:

The inheritance of a child.

“All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.” (Romans 8:14, HCSB)

First, the Holy Spirit makes us God’s children. We get something special because the Holy Spirit is our spiritual parent. He testifies that we are God’s children. When a person dies, someone has to prove that the children are actually related to the one who died. In our case, the Holy Spirit tells God – who hands out the inheritance – that we are actually His children. So we have a witness to our inheritance. The Holy Spirit makes certain that we will inherit what God offers.

The inheritance of an adoption.

“For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”” (Romans 8:15, HCSB)

Second, there is the inheritance of an adoption. An adopted children can truly say: “Daddy, Daddy” because the father can never disinherit an adopted children. The Father is obligated to give his inheritance to an adopted child.

The inheritance of a co-heir.

“The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, and if children, also heirs —heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—seeing that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.” (Romans 8:16–17, HCSB)

Third, there is the inheritance of a co-heir. This means that we are not the only ones who receive this inheritance. Someone else gets the same inheritance – gets to co-own what God the Father gives His children.

What do we inherit? Two things which we inherit:

We inherit a forever family. The Holy Spirit testifies that we are God’s children. The adoption makes this eternal family legally binding. We can never leave this spiritual family, and this family will never leave us. So we inherit the benefit of seeing each other in heaven.

Finally, we will receive a new body. It says that if we suffered in this body, then we will receive a new body. This being “glorified” with Christ means that we will inherit all of the benefits that come from the sacrifice of the One who died. Jesus died for our sins. Jesus “took care of business” when the need arose so that others could receive a benefit. One benefit of that sacrifice is a new glorified body in a place called Heaven. But it takes a sacrifice on the part of someone to make that happen.

So we receive an inheritance. This inheritance is given to God’s children, it is legally binding, and it is shared with an entire forever family. That’s the last thing to remember. An inheritance is meant to be enjoyed. If we are all God’s children through Jesus Christ, we will all get to enjoy this inheritance which Jesus made possible for us all.
