Getting God’s Comfort in the Midst of Change

Getting God’s Comfort in the Midst of Change is a simple thought reflection from Genesis 46:3-4 about the way one can receive comfort from God in the midst of change.

“God said, “I am the God of your father. Don’t be afraid of going down to Egypt. I’m going to make you a great nation there. I’ll go with you down to Egypt; I’ll also bring you back here. And when you die, Joseph will be with you; with his own hand he’ll close your eyes.””
(Genesis 46:3–4, The Message)

Changes in life can be pretty scary sometimes. Like in this instance, sometimes we have to move. While it is exciting to go somewhere else, this excitement is often coupled with anxiety. How is everything going to turn out? This question must have been on the mind of Jacob when he realized that because of a famine, he had to move with his family. Discovering that Joseph his son was going to take care of him probably gave him some comfort. Nevertheless, Jacob had worries about the move. That is when God visits him in a dream. God assures Jacob of the turn of events that will happen during the rest of his life.

As an old man, it is clear Jacob was concerned about his family taking care of him. He feared being alone. Yet God revealed to him that his son Joseph would be there until the end. God’s comfort would be shared by human comfort when Jacob needed it most.

God comforts us when we need Him. He is personally there for us when we need Him. God also provides people in our lives to give and share that comfort when we need it as well. Change can happen in life. God’s comfort stays with us just the same.
