The Attitude of a Wicked and Perverted Generation

The Attitude of a Wicked and Perverted Generation

““Get out of the way!” they said, adding, “This one came here as a foreigner, but he’s acting like a judge! Now we’ll do more harm to you than to them.” They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door.” (Genesis 19:9, HCSB)

The attitude of a wicked and perverted generation has various characteristics that are uniquely in opposition to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For example, wicked and perverted people don’t like to be judged. They will claim that people who are outside their culture are foreigners. Foreigners are people who may not understand the native ways of doing things. However, in this case, the foreigners are agents of God – the God who created these same people. As a result, these foreigners can judge their ways. These foreigners, or angels, were people who represented God’s ways and God’s laws. As a result, this wicked perverted generation would have resisted their presence.

It appears that the people of Sodom knew that judgment was coming for their sin. They knew that what they were doing was wrong. But instead of repenting and changing their behavior, they asserted their rights. “No one has a right to judge me. I have a right to my lifestyle.” The culture of a people who are wicked and perverted will always assert their individual rights over their responsibility to submit to God. This kind of generation is critical toward any system (including Christianity) that says that there is a moral code one must follow.

As Christians, we must be alert to this perspective and attitude. It does not mean that we need to be cynical about their behavior, but it does mean that we can disagree with their lifestyle. Christians have a right to stand for God’s standards.
