Even before the Russian invasion, the Lord had begun to show me Ukraine in the prophecies of Jeremiah.<\/p>\n

The word of the Lord came to me: \u201cWhat do you see, Jeremiah?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI see the branch of an almond tree,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> I replied.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Lord said to me, \u201cYou have seen correctly, <\/em><\/p>\n

for <\/em>I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Jeremiah 1:11\u201312<\/p>\n

This almond tree will help us unlock Jeremiah\u2019s prophecies about Ukraine.<\/p>\n

One of the things we know about almond blossoms is that they take five to twelve years before they begin producing fruit. The same is true about Jeremiah\u2019s prophecies\u2014we can expect some variation in the timing of their fulfillment. Some things will take a longer time and others will be shorter. However, what we do know is that God is watching to ensure that every prophecy will come to pass in the right time.<\/p>\n

Historically, when Jeremiah began to prophesy, he spoke a word from the Lord to the Jewish people who were alive at that time and who were later exiled to a country called Babylonia (later conquered by the Persians).<\/p>\n

But because biblical prophecy is cyclical\u2014which means it goes in cycles, like a wheel within a wheel\u2014there is a second cycle of prophecy that is addressed to us in our current day and time about things that are literally happening to us now. I believe some of these prophetic words point to the current situation in Ukraine. Of course, there are also other cycles of prophecy by Jeremiah that will be fulfilled by God at some point in the future.<\/p>\n

A New Passover<\/h2>\n First, Jeremiah prophesied that there would be another<\/em> Passover\u2014a second<\/em> Exodus\u2014when the Lord would again bring His people into the Promised Land.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cHowever, the days are coming,\u201d declares the Lord, \u201cwhen it will no longer be said, \u2018As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt<\/strong>,<\/em>\u2019 <\/em>but it will be said, \u2018As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north <\/strong>and out of all the countries where he had banished them.<\/em>\u2019 <\/em>For I will restore them to the land I gave their ancestors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Jeremiah 16:14\u201315<\/p>\n The first Passover brought the children of Israel out from Egypt, where they were slaves. This second Passover will bring them out of the \u201cland of the north,\u201d where they were exiles.<\/p>\n I believe the \u201cland of the north\u201d refers to Ukraine\u2014which, if you look at any map, is located directly north of Israel.<\/p>\n We also know this new Passover was not fulfilled in Jeremiah\u2019s day\u2014because Babylon is more or less east<\/em> of Jerusalem, and Babylonia itself extends further to the south. And this prophecy refers specifically to \u201cthe land of the north\u201d and to the Jews who had been scattered there.<\/p>\n How many Jewish people presently live in the \u201cland of the north\u201d? In the 1990s we know that some 1.2 million Jewish people made their Aliyah to Israel from the former Soviet Union, leaving perhaps 600,000 Jews in Russia and that many again in the Soviet bloc nations. Of these 1 million Jewish people, 75,000 were in Ukraine before the war began in February 2022\u2014and already thousands have made their way home to Israel.<\/p>\n Why did God allow such a widespread scattering of His people in the first place? People often ask me that question and the answer may surprise you. Psalm 22:3 tells us that God \u201cinhabits the praises of Israel.\u201d<\/em> This scattering was part of God\u2019s plan of salvation\u2014He permitted this great diaspora because He wants the whole world to know about Him!<\/p>\n All the ends of the earth<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 will remember and turn to the Lord,<\/em><\/p>\n and all the families of the nations<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 will bow down before him,<\/em><\/p>\n for dominion belongs to the Lord<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and he rules over the nations.<\/em><\/p>\n Psalm 22:27\u201328<\/p>\n This is not just about the nation of Israel. God scattered His people to all the nations so that every nation would understand what He is doing and have a part in this story!<\/p>\n Fishing and Hunting<\/h2>\n Second, Jeremiah also prophesied that when the Lord brings His people \u201cup out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them,\u201d that <\/em>He would \u201crestore them to the land I gave their ancestors\u201d<\/em> (Jeremiah 16:15). How will He do this? He will send fishermen and hunters.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em>\u201cBut now I will send for many fishermen<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d declares the Lord, \u201cand they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters,<\/strong> and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks.<\/em><\/p>\n Jeremiah 16:16\u201317<\/p>\n Although these prophetic words may refer to \u201cfishermen\u201d and \u201chunters\u201d that were in some way connected with Babylon in Jeremiah\u2019s day, they definitely point the \u201cfishing\u201d and \u201chunting\u201d that we see happening right now.<\/p>\n For instance, I view the work of our Aliyah Return Center with new Jewish immigrants to Israel as a clear example of \u201cfishing.\u201d In our case, what we use to attract them\u2014our \u201cfishing lure\u201d\u2014is the \u201cbait\u201d of free housing (even the Hebrew word for \u201chouse\u201d is bayit!<\/em>).<\/p>\n And what we see happening now in places like Russia and Iran is \u201chunting\u201d in the sense that Jewish people are being \u201cdriven\u201d from cover and \u201cpushed\u201d out into the open. All of the sad examples of anti-Semitism we see in the world today reflect this kind of \u201chunting.\u201d<\/p>\n And right now, this prophecy is being fulfilled before our eyes in living color as we watch the conflict in Ukraine drive the Jewish people from their homes\u2014and \u201cpush\u201d them from the \u201cland of the north\u201d toward Israel.<\/p>\n A North Wind Blowing<\/h2>\n Finally, Jeremiah speaks prophetically of four winds. These winds are His appointed messengers. Psalm 104:4 tells us that \u201cHe makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em>I will bring against Elam the four winds<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from the four quarters of heaven;<\/em><\/p>\n I will scatter them to the four winds,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and there will not be a nation<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 where Elam<\/em>\u2019<\/em>s exiles do not go.<\/em><\/p>\n Jeremiah 49:36<\/p>\n And in these days prophesied by Jeremiah, I believe a north wind from Ukraine is blowing\u2014not a wind that scatters, but a wind that gathers. I believe we are that wind today, and together it is our privilege to be part of this great gathering of God\u2019s people from every nation, when the Lord will inhabit the praises of all His people.
