It might be possible that a craving was the downfall of humanity.

Back in the garden, maybe Adam and Eve were just having sugar withdrawals, and that’s why that fruit seemed so appealing. I know when I’m craving sugar, I am positively maniacal about it. Cravings — whether they’re emotional or physical — have led me to bad choices and ultimately, dead ends. Somehow, a craving never seems to satisfy completely.

I wonder if it’s because when we got put in these physical bodies, we were pulled away from God, and so we are always longing for that one thing we can’t yet have — the ultimate intimacy, the fullest of knowings and havings. And chocolate just doesn’t cut it. Not even dark chocolate with sea salt and maybe a little caramel…

Where was I? Oh right! Cravings.

What’s really cool when you think about it is how God made us these beautiful physical bodies with energy systems that require food, and then he made amazing, gorgeous, colorful food to feed those systems. Alas, since eating from that darn tree of knowledge, we think we’re all smarter than God, and have “created” this stuff we like to call “food products”.

Which is all slightly terrifying when you think about it.

It might take a little while and some good, solid intention, but we can get back to the way it’s supposed to be — a state of shalom with our bodies — by paying attention to our cravings and figuring out what they actually are trying to tell us.

c-osullivanMy friend, Caryn O’Sullivan, is a health coach who understands cravings. She’s got an amazing personal health story, and at The Whole Woman Summit in March, she’s going help us decode our cravings and learn what our body is actually searching for. She’ll help us find healthy alternatives to banish physical cravings once and for all, and increase energy to boot.

While God is our ultimate craving, chocolate may be a viable substitute. At least, a girl can pray that’s what Caryn will say, right? 🙂

Each Friday for the next few months, I’ll be writing about one of the amazing women who are speaking at The Whole Woman Summit in March. These are women who are movers and shakers, Christian and not, who are doing very cool things in the world. The summit is all about the things that matter — MIND. BODY. SPIRIT. WORK. RELATIONSHIPS. JUSTICE. The summit is entirely online, and all registrants will receive video recordings of all sessions, so no worries if you miss any.

See you at the summit!
