Self-Plagiarism and Self-Pleasure

Last updated on: July 31, 2012 at 4:20 pm   By Jeremy Lott

After the flap over Jonah Lehrer’s humiliation and firing from the New Yorker for making up Bob Dylan quotes and lying about it, I worry that one really foolish idea will take hold and perhaps even give trial lawyers the scent of money. Since critics started digging into Lehrer’s work after charges of self-plagiarism surfaced, and since he did eventually get dragged down to disgrace, people may assume that there’s merit to the idea of self-plagiarism. There isn’t. It’s a... Read more

Explaining the Millennial Meltdown

Last updated on: July 30, 2012 at 10:45 am   By Jeremy Lott

Baylor’s Research on Religion podcast this week features a long interview with your diarist. This is the second time I’ve been on host Anthony “Tony” Gill’s program (first time here). There’s too much there to even try to unpack in one blogpost, so I’ll stick to one item: the declining church attendance of younger Americans. Religion in America has always been highly mobile. Indeed some scholars think that is what has made it so effective. Philip Jenkins several years ago... Read more

Fun thought experiment: If over the last four years somebody had sent to the White House dozens of e-mails with the same kind of creepy subject lines that the Obama campaign routinely dispatches* to my inbox, how long would it have taken before the Secret Service came knocking? (more…) Read more

Suffer the Little Collection Basket

Last updated on: July 29, 2012 at 4:04 pm   By Jeremy Lott

Your diarist was dreading going to Mass at the home parish today after a few weeks in Bellingham but — you know what? — not so bad. Father Flapdoodle’s* homily on the loaves and the fishes was short and not awful, though it did arguably veer a little too close to Steven Spielberg’s Theology of the Infallible Child for comfort. Then again, some slack should be cut because the children were what really made Mass worth it this morning. The... Read more
