Hells Bells

Last updated on: August 9, 2012 at 12:12 pm   By Jeremy Lott

The Bellingham Bells baseball game last night was highly contentious and a little bit tragic. The Bells overtook the Walla Walla Sweets’ early lead, then fell apart. Both the coach and the starting pitcher got tossed for yelling at the umps over bad calls. The Bells almost but didn’t quite manage a 9th inning attempt to put the egg back together again. They lost 7-6. Tom Hanks reminded us that there is no crying in baseball. Yet shouldn’t there be... Read more

This is a test of the emergency publicity system. It is only a test. Were this a real PR Emergency, we would begin bombing Russia in five minutes. But like I said, this is only a test, so the Russian army can stand down. Read more

Here’s a picture of the postgame prayer after the last game of the season for my father and kid brother’s Sunrise Baptist softball team. Dad, praying, is indicated with a halo below, and an arrow points to the kid. For beer leaguers and those of you who’ve never been to a church league game, that’s how it works… (more…) Read more

I Am Surrounded by Democrats

Last updated on: August 8, 2012 at 3:30 am   By Jeremy Lott

I’m at Chuckanut Brewery tonight with the local Democrats waiting for the primary election returns to come in. Why Democrats? Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. 7:06: Your diarist rolls in with the silver Subaru sedan and a sign at the brewery says “Welcome Democrats.” Signs for all the local races are planted in the planters and put up on the walls of the beer garden. I go to get out and, at the last second,... Read more

It took a bit of doing and some help but I finally got the hammock up today. Since it is my first hammock, I decided to go big. The thing is solid. It has a heavy frame, wheels, etc. and can carry 400 pounds. Lowe’s would have assembled it for $10, which would have been well worth it. But then I would have had to transport it, and good luck with that. It was hard enough just to move the... Read more

If I Had a Hammock

Last updated on: August 6, 2012 at 12:34 pm   By Jeremy Lott

You know, it’s possible I just managed to capture the whole of my politics in a single parody blog title. The “hammer” of “If I Had a Hammer” was Pete Seeger’s 1949 tribute to those members of the Communist Party USA who were on trial for advocating the overthrow of the US government. Here are Peter, Paul and Mary performing the song once the politics had simmered a bit: (more…) Read more
