Poem for the Whiners
Last updated on: August 17, 2012 at 3:45 pm By Jeremy Lott
People in Lynden and Whatcom County generally have started whining about the unseasonably hot weather. This would not bother me were it not for the fact that I just spent months listening to folks go on about how cold and cloudy it was. It all brings to mind a poem that my late Grandpa Lott used to recite: As a rule man’s a fool When it’s hot he wants it cool When it’s cool he wants it hot Always wanting... Read more

Modest English Usage

I was shocked recently to learn that housesitting involves a whole lot more than sitting around said house. So does babysitting, for that matter. In fact, some folks actually discourage sitting on babies. Something new every day, huh? Read more

Mitt Whiffed on Mormon Leadership
Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 12:39 pm By Jeremy Lott
The latest issue of Business Week has an interview with Mitt Romney. The question was put to him, “why does Mormonism produce such a disproportionate number of political and business leaders?” Romney gave what you might call a Mormon-flavored ecumenical answer, which I will reproduce in full. Please circle back after the block quote, because I want to take a stab at it. He said: (more…) Read more

Less Gunshots, More Hits at the Fair
Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 11:31 am By Jeremy Lott
It’s Fair Week in Lynden. Given the beefed up security and the fact that any known Mexican gang-bangers and wannabes in Whatcom County are being turned away, I think it’s safe to predict that this year we’ll avoid gunfire. Another nice addition this year is an act called the Gothard Sisters. Your diarist is scheduled to interview them early this afternoon, though the questions aren’t exactly writing themselves. Here’s a clip of the girls in action, dancing and wailing on... Read more

Children of the Corn Like You’ve Never Seen It Before
Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 10:57 am By Jeremy Lott
OK, here’s a picture of what I was up to over the last day. That’s the menu for Children of the Corn being projected onto a screen in my back yard, just as the last light of the sun fades, in front of a cornfield. We had the usual suspects over, sat on the back porch, and watched this beloved B movie classic. When that was done, we took down the screen, projected onto corn and trees and had an... Read more

Candy for the Fox News Crowd
Last updated on: August 16, 2012 at 10:41 am By Jeremy Lott
In this era of ideological niche marketing, somebody should launch a conservative candy line called Now or Later, to remind the kids about scarcity, tradeoffs, and the fact that their parents aren’t made of money. Read more

I Got to Second Base!
Last updated on: August 14, 2012 at 11:39 am By Jeremy Lott
The Bellingham Bells lost last night to the Wenatchee AppleSox — yes, seriously, they’re called the AppleSox — in the third game of a three game, elimination series. That means they won’t be playing for the league championship this weekend. With the Bells done and my dad and kid brother’s team over for the year, this will mean considerably less baseball blogging. For those readers who were getting sick of it, indulge me in one last story for the foreseeable.... Read more

Jimmy Fallon Goes to Heaven
Last updated on: August 14, 2012 at 6:16 am By Jeremy Lott
If I were the Almighty, Jimmy Fallon would make it into heaven purely on the strength of what I am about to share with you, dear reader. Behold, Jim Morrison returned from the beyond the grave to perform “Reading Rainbow” for your edification and utter astonishment. Read more

Bourne Legacy Versus… Ted
Last updated on: August 13, 2012 at 10:36 pm By Jeremy Lott
This weekend, the usual cast of characters drove up just over the border to watch the new Bourne movie at the drive-in in Langley, BC as part of a triple feature. The other two movies after Bourne Legacy were Ted and Savages. Savages came on way past our bedtimes, so that left Bourne and Ted. Ted was in almost every way a better movie than Bourne. I don’t just mean the jokes were better. I mean the dialogue was better... Read more

You Can Pry That Plastic Bag From My Cold, Dead Etc.
Last updated on: August 13, 2012 at 10:00 pm By Jeremy Lott
Bellingham is one of the latest cities to ban plastic bags for businesses to wrap our purchases in. A lot of people find this highly annoying. One sign in nearby Ferndale says, “Buy local. We still have plastic bags.” The ban is relevant because I was shopping today with some friends at a store in Bellingham’s Fairhaven district. When we went to check out, the lady behind the counter was having a devil of a time packaging some of my... Read more
