On the Caging of Children: Words from an Immigration Rally at Dallas City Hall

Last updated on: June 15, 2018 at 11:11 am By Jeff Hood

*Delivered on June 14, 2018 First of all, I don’t speak Spanish. I’m sorry. With that said, I do speak love. I understand what love looks like in practice. I do understand that keeping children in cages is not love. I brought my son with me today. There is a part of me that wants him to know how lucky he is to not be in one of these cages. But the bigger part of me, wants him... Read more

The Funeral Sermon: Preaching to Bigots

Last updated on: June 13, 2018 at 12:10 am By Jeff Hood

“Don’t say anything controversial.” Ominous words for an ominous time festered ominously. After years of suffering, Gladys Dillard died. This was not any old death. This was the death of my beloved grandmother. When I was asked to preach her funeral, I knew that this would be a dangerous assignment. You see…my family is filled with bigots. They hate anything or anyone that doesn’t look or act like them. Since it was a funeral, I convinced myself that... Read more

Existence as Threat

Last updated on: June 6, 2018 at 8:41 pm By Jeff Hood

“Hell yeah!” The kids were pumped up. The park is a sacred space for our family. Communion meets us at the swings. Baptism meets us at the creek. Worship meets us everywhere. In such a spirit, I peddled swiftly. Upon arrival, everybody jumped out of the cart. I was scared that somebody was going to get hurt. They were not. Playing is strenuous. No doubt about it. I had to sit down. Exhausted, I threw myself down on... Read more

A Homily for Gladys Dillard, My Grandmother

Last updated on: June 6, 2018 at 8:29 pm By Jeff Hood

What are we doing here? Really… What are we doing here? I look down. I see a box. In that box is a corpse and that is about it. Gladys Dillard has done gone and she ain’t coming back. So, why are we here? If it ain’t about Gladys, then who is it about? It’s about us. It’s about what we can learn. It’s about what we can feel. It’s about what we can know. It’s about who we... The Death of a Stranger

Last updated on: June 2, 2018 at 9:17 pm By Jeff Hood

Train done gone. The mind is a precious thing. Never is such a fact more obvious than when it starts to shutdown. Memory. Function. Relations. Those who loved the person are eventually forced to love a stranger. It doesn’t matter what the sickness is…the diagnosis for the remnant is heartbreak. The journey doesn’t stop with death. If so, one would be able to simply let the person go. In fact death is a further affliction for the survivors,... Read more

The United States Flag at the Front of YOUR Church is Blasphemous

Last updated on: May 27, 2018 at 10:13 pm By Jeff Hood

*Originally Published May 2014 A United States soldier processed the flag of the United States of America in to our sanctuary as we stood at attention singing “God Bless America.” The veterans in our midst were honored as we sang the “Star Spangled Banner.” The “Battle Hymn of the Republic” proceeded the pastor’s fiery sermon on the coming destruction of our beloved nation if we “…did not turn from our wicked ways.” Somehow gays, abortion and popular... The Offense of a Backyard Flag

Last updated on: May 24, 2018 at 7:02 pm By Jeff Hood

“Thou shall have no other Gods but me…” One of the earliest teachings of the known God is to not have other Gods. I would imagine that the worship of a God of cloth would especially enrage God. Hypocrisy has long been at the center of this experiment known as the United States of America. From the beginning, we have declared our love of God and our hatred of our neighbor. Genocide of Native populations. Slavery of persons of... Read more

Jesus Smokes Weed: Rallying for Marijuana

Last updated on: May 17, 2018 at 10:59 pm By Jeff Hood

*Prepared remarks for the DFW Marijuana March 2018 / Delivered May 12, 2018 Good afternoon. It is interesting for me to find myself amongst you. I don’t smoke. However, I do know how to recognize injustice. I am a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have committed myself to fighting for the rights of all. While I don’t know if Jesus and the disciples smoked or not. However, I do know that Jesus is standing here... Read more

Jump or Burn?: On Dr. David Goodall

Last updated on: May 11, 2018 at 10:54 am By Jeff Hood

Do you think you could do it? Do you think that you could press a button to end your life? Most couldn’t. Terror filled the air. Nobody was getting out of the skyscraper alive. The fire got closer and closer. The flames birthed two options…jump or burn. “Hell awaits those who would dare defy the plan of God.” I heard it repeatedly. I guess they didn’t want us to kill ourselves…or perhaps misery loves company. Pain... Read more
