Progressive Christians Often Seem to Not Give Two Shits About the Persecution, Imprisonment and Martyrdom of Fellow Christians and I Think I Know Why: A Retrospective

Last updated on: May 16, 2014 at 9:45 pm   By Jeff Hood

I was scanning the news a few nights ago and ran across the name of Meriam Yehya Ibrahim.  I doubt many people in our churches know the name of Ibrahim or the fact that she was sentenced to death in Sudan last week for being a Christian.  There are without a doubt components of patriarchy and misogyny in Ibrahim’s case…but what about Kenneth Bae?  Imprisoned for proselytizing, Bae is in declining health in a North Korean prison.  Saeed Abedini... Read more

The Cross and The Needle: Deep in the Heart of Texas

Last updated on: May 12, 2014 at 10:43 pm   By Jeff Hood

Numerous officials hurried into a back room.  The meeting was called to order by the top official.  The conversation began with the official clearing his throat and declaring, “The press is getting bad out there.  Stand your ground and do not release any details about what is going to happen.  This process must remain secret.”  The officials left the room with no comment for the press.   The murmurs of execution were a long time in the making.  Then the... Read more

The Ethics of Our Table: Jesus and Meat

Last updated on: May 10, 2014 at 10:31 pm   By Jeff Hood

Outside during the visit, everyone enjoys playing fetch with the family dog.  When the host of the house whistles for the dog to come around back, no one pays attention.  A few hours later, everyone gathers at the dinner table and prepares for a great feast.  After a prayer asking God’s blessing on the meal and the hands that prepared it, the hosts bring out all sorts of breads and vegetables.  Then…as the gathered lean in expectantly for the main... Read more

Lives Less Valued: Why Black Girls Matter

Last updated on: May 6, 2014 at 11:48 am   By Jeff Hood

The classrooms were filled with learning and dreaming.  Students were playing on the playground and eating in the cafeteria.  The gates of the rural academy flew open and gunmen demanded everyone go to the courtyard.  Someone was able to make a quick phone call to authorities but it was too late.  The students were already loaded into trucks and driven off…kidnapped from their refuge of learning.  Now imagine the students were white girls.   The lack of outrage from... Read more

Courage Not Comfort: A Word to the Rich Young Rulers of Our Churches

Last updated on: May 4, 2014 at 4:10 pm   By Jeff Hood

I got a phone call from a friend the other day.  “I have decided to perform a same-sex wedding in defiance of the denomination,” she said.  I congratulated her for her courage and encouraged her to come out publicly with her decision.  “I can’t do that.  I will end up with no job, no insurance and no pension.  I want you to write about this to encourage others…just please don’t use my name or denomination,” she replied.   I need... Read more

Botched Executions: A Visit, Jesus in Oklahoma and Us

Last updated on: April 29, 2014 at 10:26 pm   By Jeff Hood

This morning I visited a young man in the Tarrant County Correctional Facility in Fort Worth, Texas.  When I arrived at the appointed booth, I felt the urge to ask the young man about his crime.  Then I remembered the words of Jesus in Matthew 25.  “I was in prison and you came to me.”  Jesus does not say anything about guilt or innocence in this declaration of incarnation with those who are in prison.  I mentally botched the execution... Read more

Stand Up! : Remarks at Dallas Pastors for Texas Children

Last updated on: April 28, 2014 at 10:57 pm   By Jeff Hood

I have spent a few days thinking about Pastors for Texas Children generally and this meeting in particular.  My thoughts and spirit has consistently been transported to this vision of standing up.  What does it look like to stand up?  What does it look like to have courage?  We have many churches represented and many denominations represented here today…but I think that there is one thing that all of the gathered can agree on.  I think we can all agree... Read more

Donald Sterling, Churches and Race

Last updated on: April 27, 2014 at 2:21 pm   By Jeff Hood

I grew up on the Southside of Atlanta.  Our county transitioned from a majority white context to a majority black context in my youth.  In first grade, I was a student under Ms. Ellington…the first black teacher at Lake Harbin Elementary School.  I will be forever grateful to Ms. Ellington for teaching me about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  In January of that year, Ms. Ellington chose me to recite Dr. King’s speech at the March on Washington. ... Read more

Last updated on: April 26, 2014 at 9:06 pm   By Jeff Hood

Baptist Christian Ethicist Glen Stassen died today after a battle with cancer.  We only spoke once.  The conversation occurred after I sent him the following email on September 5, 2009: Dr. Stassen,   My name is Jeff Hood and I am a ThM student at The Candler School of Theology at Emory University studying Christian interaction with social movements.  I am currently enrolled in a doctoral seminar entitled 20th Century Christian Social Ethic with Dr. Elizabeth Bounds.  I am... Read more
