Women Disciples | a Brief Mother’s Day Reflection 2024-05-12T19:08:39-04:00 Rev. Jared V. Ingle

We often think of women at the crucifixion, and at the empty tomb. However, women traveled with Jesus and the Disciples throughout His ministry.

Soon afterward Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took his twelve disciples with him, along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons; Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples.
Luke 8.1-3

First of all, this Mother’s Day, it may come as a surprise to some that Jesus actually had women followers and supporters. Luke tells us the most about this.

Secondly, in those days it was common for women to travel with groups of men, in order to have protection along the highways. Jesus and The Twelve provided protection for these women who wanted to participate in the ministry of Christ.

Third, in return these women offered support. First of all, they offered financial and material support. Some of them were very wealthy. It’s quite possible that they funded the travels of Jesus and the Disciples. Secondly, they offered a unique form of moral support. As women and as mothers, at the risk of sounding stereotypical, they were nurturers. This is no great surprise if one reads the other accounts of women involved in Jesus’ ministry.

I think it is easy to underestimate the value of these women in the life of Christ. His own mother is often among them.

Harry Connick Jr. Ave Maria

As Mother’s Day draws to a close, I reflect on those who have been there for me offering support. May I never underestimate their role in my life over the years at various times, as well as now.
