Great moves of God | from 3 readings in Isaiah 2020-11-17T13:01:16-05:00 Rev. Jared V. Ingle

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Have you heard of any great moves of God lately?

Isaiah 43.22-24

Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob;
     but you have been weary of me, O Israel!
You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings,
     or honored me with your sacrifices.
I have not burdened you with offerings,
     or wearied you with frankincense.
You have not bought me sweet cane with money,
     or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins;
     you have wearied me with your iniquities. (NRSV)

There are of course, ways people are discovering healing through healthy eating.  I’m honestly wondering if adding goat cheese, cane sugar, and the right kinds of fat back into my diet could be in line with this passage, since these are the sacrifices eaten by those who are called to serve in the Temple.

Are we talking about keto, or the pulling of essential oils like frankincense?

Are there dietary movements that are possibly moves of God?  🙂

I’m sorry, I’m not sure, but I wonder at times.

Isaiah 46.5

“To whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal
     And compare Me, that we should be alike? (NKJV)

To whom will we compare God?  Certainly not to all the great moves of God?  He’s more than any particular movement, all that and more.

Isaiah 47.10

“For you have trusted in your wickedness;
     You have said, ‘No one sees me’;
Your wisdom and your knowledge have warped you;
     And you have said in your heart,
     ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’

Isaiah is speaking to God’s people who are chasing knowledge and wisdom in other movements, until they become jaded.

Isaiah 48.3, 5

The former things I declared long ago,
     they went out from my mouth and I made them known;
     then suddenly I did them and they came to pass…
I declared them to you from long ago,
     before they came to pass I announced them to you,
so that you would not say, “My idol did them,
    my carved image and my cast image commanded them.”

When we can’t seem to track the moves of God to encourage us and offer support when times have changed, who better to turn to than God, who declares the end from the beginning?

We may face choices to turn back (to listen to doomsday prophets and spin doctors).  However, those choices often lead to a jaded perception (see Isaiah 47.10 above).

Instead of trying to catch the wave of the next trend or predict the new moves of God, sometimes we are called to the mundane, to the simple and true.  We are called to keep His commandments, nothing spectacular, unless God allows us to witness the results (i.e. peace like a river, righteousness like waves of the sea).

Isaiah 48.18

O that you had paid attention to my commandments!
     Then your prosperity would have been like a river,
     and your success like the waves of the sea; (NRSV)

Don’t merely grasp for a word picture, when there is definitely a metaphysical component.  Are we called to the mundane, to the everyday?… at times, yeah!

At other times, we certainly want to wade out into the water and let wave after wave of the cresting tide sweep over our souls.  Still, we may want to cast our bread upon the rolling river of God, and watch it multiply.

However, we know that no matter what moves of God we are tracking or hoping for, if we are keeping His commandments we have certain assurances.  If we allow God to speak to us throughout the day in our mundane tasks and life of obedience, then we have certain assurances.

Whether or not our prime time of the day is morning is of little consequence. He can speak to us at our best time of the day, as we tune-in.

Isaiah 50.4.b

Morning by morning he wakens – wakens my ear
     to listen as those who are taught. (NRSV)
