The Total Stranger: Your Best Friend
Last updated on: October 22, 2022 at 1:31 pm By Chase Padusniak
It might be Sweeney Todd’s (2007) fault. When I hear about a barber-serial killer, I assume humor, or at least campiness. It just lends itself to black comedy, or at least hokey jeering. Defenseless victims in the perfect spot to have their throats slit, snake oil salesmen and Dickensian orphaned errand boys, dancing—as if in love—around human-flesh-filled meat pies. The darkest things occasion laughter because, well, what else are we supposed to do? The Stylist (2020) doesn’t go for laughs.... Read more

Which is the Original Bible? Is it the Catholic One?
Last updated on: October 20, 2022 at 6:12 pm By Chase Padusniak
Anyone who has spent time on the Christian part of the internet knows that the participants from various denominations love debate. What’s more, they know that a favorite topic of debate—perhaps even more than whether Catholics worship Mary (maybe the Orthodox too, if it’s a particularly enlightened crowd—is the canon of the Bible. Protestants lament the Catholic fall from the foundational doctrine of Sola Scriptura. Catholics note that Luther expunged a few books from the Biblical canon, most notably the... Read more

If you’re looking for a great documentary, look no further than Vice’s YouTube showcase of Valerie Blankenbyl’s The Bubble (2021). Put aside the true crime. Think about cults some other time. It’s free, folks. It comes complete with an interview with the director. You’ve got no excuse. If you read the comments on the video, you’ll see that many are praising its balanced take on a situation so emblematic of the time in which we live that it feels foolish... Read more

The World Hates Clowns; Clowns Hate the World
Last updated on: October 15, 2022 at 2:12 pm By Chase Padusniak
Shakes the Clown (1991) sounds great on paper. That’s why I put it on (well, and it was free). Bobcat Goldthwait plays the titular clown, who inhabits a suburban world (of that peculiar 90s, 50s throwback variety) in which various entertainers congregate in gangs. Think Switchblade Sisters (1975) meets The Truman Show (1998) with a whole lot more booze. Shakes and his buddies hang out at a bar with all the other clowns broken up into cliques. Adam Sandler is... Read more

How Bravo (Nearly) Ruined (Lots of) Horror Movies for Me (a Vulnerable Child)
Last updated on: October 8, 2022 at 11:55 am By Chase Padusniak
When I was a kid, two pieces of media ruined a plethora of movie endings for me. The first was one of those web series, a real product of its time in which sickeningly bright colors met outrageous violence coalesced in a sort of pre-ironic way: Happy Tree Friends (1999-2016). I recall the series (or was it also a site?) trunctating famous horror films, the furry little psychopaths from the main show playing all the lead roles, goring it up... Read more

Everybody’s Got Theirs

I saw Kevin Smith’s Clerks III (2022) the first night it was in theaters. I feel obligated to review it. Partly because I like Smith’s work (even taken on the whole). Partly, because I’m from New Jersey. And partly because work has kept me so busy that I’ve hardly had time to watch a movie in weeks. But what can I say? It’s a movie for the fans. Smith is clear about this. Clerks III opens with a “thank you”... Read more

Mark Proksch is great. So great, in fact, that I, jealous man that I am, almost felt bummed when I learned he had achieved some mainstream success with What We Do in the Shadows (2019-2022). Like my favorite German indie group, Fotos, I want him sitting at 14k listeners per month on Spotify (or IMDb, whatever). As Kenny “K-Strass” Strasser, he went around Midwestern morning shows and announced himself as a representative of Zim Zam, schlepping school to school with... Read more

Fact, Fiction, or Just the Way Things Are?
Last updated on: September 6, 2022 at 6:03 pm By Chase Padusniak
1998’s The Last Broadcast is a movie made for me. I am a staunch New Jersey supremacist. The film takes place in Jersey’s gorgeously desolate Pine Barrens. I adore true crime and shlocky 90s horror. The Last Broadcast is a (pre-Blair Witch Project) found footage movie about a murder carried out either by the Jersey Devil or a deranged occultist deep in the woods. I love a good mockumentary. This movie is—more than anything else—a serious mockumentary, a strait-laced send-up... Read more

Wake Me Up When I’m Rock Hudson, then Kill Me
Last updated on: August 26, 2022 at 1:05 pm By Chase Padusniak
Reincarnation always seemed worse than Hell to me. Never mind that I feel pretty bound up in this-here body and these-here experiences, one ride on this train is enough. To invest all that love and hatred into one cast of characters, forget everything, and do it all again as a vole—not for me. Hell, for all its problems, is at least a place you can put down roots. It’s torture, yes, and eternal darkness, but it’s got the benefit of... Read more

Move Over Hell, VR Is (Allegedly) Here to Stay
Last updated on: August 19, 2022 at 4:14 pm By Chase Padusniak
I am the wrong person to review this movie. As long as I can remember, I have had a controller in one hand and an axe for robot murdering in the other. Buried in my bones is a feeling that the digital world—whether always or merely as it exists now, and who can tell the difference at this stage—is a product and a consequence of our alienation. I saw through Google Glass. I still rarely use Google Docs (I didn’t... Read more
