This is a recovery effort. In 2002, My Big Fat Greek Wedding hit theaters around the US. For those too young to remember, it was a sensation. Even as a child, I remember my shock when it was still on the marquis what seemed like months later. But did it open at the top of the box office?

No. Swimfan did. This now almost entirely forgotten teen thriller made back its $10 million budget in one weekend and went on to earn $20 million more over the succeeding weeks. Its main cast has gone on to respectable but not breakout careers in television and film. It’s the perfect aughts workhorse of a film—what Gregg Turkington might call a “popcorn classic.”

And here I am digging it up. My wife and I watched it this past week, because it’s October and October always means finding new thrillers and chillers. What we found in Swimfan was, yes, a Fatal Attraction (1987) rip-off set in a high school. But a bit more than that too: it’s serviceable, the kind of film you’d rent for rainy-night watching. Competently made and reasonably gripping.

The film follows Ben Cronin (Jesse Bradford) as a star swimmer who cheats on his dependable girlfriend with Madison Bell (Erika Christensen), a recent transfer student from the South. Despite his near immediate regret, Ben can’t escape the obsession of his jilted side piece. And, of course, stalking, intimidation, and violence ensue.

There’s nothing all that special here. Not really. But I couldn’t help but find myself back trawling the aisles of Blockbuster. Swimfan is a bit like Blockbuster, now that I think about it: uninspired but subject to a nostalgia for the never-quite-real. There’s some pleasure in that, in looking back, within limits, anyway.
